Alaska Tundra tires vs Bushwheels

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Does anyone know the part number for the double puck brake caliper and other aircraft which used them? I may be able to get a set used and then rebuild them. I have shallow pockets at the moment. :cry:

My 29's are Airhawks and came from AKBW. I think they also have the best prices on Cleveland brakes, and don't need to be rebuilt =D> .

You can get airhawks with full tread, or shaved(saves 5lbs./tire). Shaved, they will still have some tread. I think you can also get them recapped??? If they are smooth, they are pretty much shot, far as I'm concerned.

If you go to wider tires(8.50's and larger) you will also have to off set your rotor, or get one with built in offset, and different torque bracket. Brake gets offset about 1/4".

Actually, when those 29X10X11 tires are bald, they will STILL wear on a light plane for about a hundred years. We used to have Denali Bandag buff them down to get rid of the tread (weight reduction) and those things would wear forever it seemed.

You might also consider the 8.50 X 10 tires on the same wheel setups. That gives about a 24 inch tire diameter, which may be plenty with less weight and drag, depening on what you're doing. I ran those on a Cub for years, and really never needed anything bigger.

Well,if they are bald, they do wear.

They may go for long time on grass or smooth dirt, don't know for asphalt. I understand that they are a very tough/long lasting tire. And am very happy with mine. I did have one flat on mine. And was surprised at how thin the casing seemed(4 ply).

I also feel for my application, dealing with cactus and sharp rocks, the more rubber the better.

Well, consider that around here, that's pretty much the standard tire on AirTractors, AgCats, etc, some of which are operating at 12,000 pounds or more, nearly all on pavement, and some of those tires are near bald. I doubt one that's been buffed down is going to wear out in my lifetime on a Cub type airplane :D . Cactus, etc---maybe. Lots of weight in those tires, though.

For years I had the 8.5 X 10 Gararows and liked them a lot. They are a stiffer tirer then the Alaska Bush Wheels. Not to bad for landing on paved runways.
I then went to the 26 inch BW. They where made in Eagle River just out of Anchorage. When Bob made them I had him lay in a extra thickness of rubber to make them a little stiffer. I now have the 31 inch BWs with the BW tail wheel. Excellent tires. I like the height and they hold up well for my needs.
