Alberta Airstrips

Sitting here looking at maps and foreflight (while it is -35 outside), there are a few strips that I have not been into that I will check out in the spring to expand the playground.

I know there are a few members here from this area......has anyone been into Wildhay, Berland or Smokey Tower? They are south of Grande Prairie.

I will now spend the afternoon trying to figure out why my avatar looks like I posted it after a few too many drinks! :?

Haven't been to the ones you listed, but have you been to Ram Falls? Only 100NM give or take from Stony Plain, it was my favourite place to fly when I lived in Red Deer.

Re: Alberta Airstrips

I've driven into Smokey Tower. Grass was quite tall, not sure I'd fly into there. Its also behind a locked gate. I don't think its used at all anymore, exceot maybe the odd chopper. I worked close to it and never saw any planes going in and out. I will be flying into Sherman Meadows at least once this summer. Its always been in good shape when I've driven in there, and nice camping there. Its shown as abandoned, but is in good shape.

Sherman Meadows is south west of GP and north west of Grande Cache. My Garmin waypoint is:
N54*17.013'
W119*50.051'

Found some pictures I took of Sherman meadows.

Terrain rises to the south. land south and takeoff north. You can follow the torrens creek to the north if needed.

Re: Alberta Airstrips

Welcome, Yukoner.

For you northern brothers, a good feature for finding nearby pilots is if you use the groups feature. In the Community tab of the main menu there is a link for Groups > Regional. Click that and you can see all the groups for regions around the USA and Canada. There's only one for Canada, but if we get enough participants I can extend that for all the provinces.

https://www.backcountrypilot.org/groups ... tegoryid=7

It's kinda cool because if you're a new member, you'd likely begin by looking for a group closest to you --or-- for your aircraft type. When someone from the NW Oregon group posts, all of the members get an email. It's great for fly-outs.

Landed at Sherman meadows Tuesday night. It's in great shape. One set of ruts down the center, but the grass is long there. Lots of room to land on either side.
