Alternate source for Goodyear 850-6 tires?

Anyone else is looking for 850-6 tires?

I'm starting to see some chord material on the current 850s mounted
on my '54 C-180, so it's time for Daddy to get a new pair of shoes....

I called Desser, and the story I got was the company that was making
this tire/size under license for Goodyear went tits up last July, so there's
no stock. Story went on further as to how they were currently setting
up a plant in Poland to produce these, but everything is back-ordered
until at least the end of January (as often as I fly, my current tires won't
last until the end of January....).

I called Aircraft Spruce but they're OoS as well....

I suppose I could always put the 600-6s and original panties back
on my 180 until they get their act together in Poland.... :)

Why not just have Desser recap your 8.50s and put them back on. I had a set done this summer for my 180 and they look great. I think they were about $70 or $80 each.

I'd be up for that, and I even looked over the re-cap web pages on
Desser's web site, but they plainly state that if chord is showing, don't
bother shipping the tires to them for a re-cap 'cause they won't
do it (they'll also charge you a disposal fee...).

We just got three 8.50 x 6's for my 172 and had the same problems. they're going on later this month.

We got 2 from Sky Geek and 1 from Tires Unlimited. We learned to call about the tires after one company took the order for all three and then called back wanting more money - after charging my credit card! We got the money back pretty quickly, but we learned to call first.

You might try some other out of the way suppliers like Stottards in Anchorage, Aviall, or try Preffered Airparts they may have some good surplus tires. I just went with the 26'' Goodyears tires on my 180. Going to install them this weekend.

…speaking of tires! I just saw cords showing on my 3 year old 31 inch radial bushwheels. I just did some eye opening math.

I wasn’t keeping track of the number of landings I do, until I got a PC log book program. So now I have the landings for the last 400 hours. Surprisingly, I land a lot more then I previously thought.

296 landings in 400 hours or .74 landings per hour. Extrapolating that to my 2020 hours, I have about 1495 landings on these tires.

However, I would say 95 per cent of them were on grass, but for figuring, I used 90 per cent grass. With that number, I made 150 landings on pavement.

These tires cost me $2.28 / each landing. But on pavement, where the ware comes from, they cost a whopping $22.67 per landing!

See my post on the 180 forum, I did just that a year and a half ago and am perfectly satisfied....but that still doesn't solve the tube problem.

BTW, any other 8.50 owners out there, it's probably a real good idea not to let your tires get down to the cords or they may not pass for retreads!
(and that seems to be the only option for the near term until someone decides to get into the tire business!)

What tube problem?
Are they scarce again? I bought two when I had the 8.50s recapped, and just put them in my Goodyear 26s two weeks ago.

So buy McCreary's. What's the problem?
I like the McCreary Airtrac's better anyway... my 170 is set up with quite a bit of camber, so the tires ride on the "corners". The Airtrac's seem to have a rounder profile than the GY's which would seem to be better for this application. I think the Airtracs look better too, and have gotten pretty good service life out of them. So it's a win/win IMHO.
Bela, why don't you buy a set of 10 adapters from Gar Aero & run some 850 x 10's... that would look gnarly, dude.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!

In my experience, the McReary's are all over the place in size. We found a set on a 185 that I thought was handling weird where one tire was an INCH different in diameter. We had substantially shorter service life with McCrearys as well, but this was airplanes that live outside, so UV appeared to be the culprit.

None of the McCreary's were as large in diameter as the Goodyears.

The Goodyear 26 may be an option, but they'll require a field approval. The Alaska Region FAA has a process for such approvals, and you may be able to get them approved in that manner, but.....buyer beware. I'd get hte approval done first.

The STC on the Landes nose fork requires Goodyears if you want to go to 8.50 x 6.

I didn't realize that there was a shortage of tubes, I ordered 4 when I ordered the tires since I didn't think that size would be a "normal" size here in the Okie state.

Mike is 100% correct about the inconsistencies of the McCreary tires.
I have both the GY's and McCreary. The McCreary tires are much smaller in diameter and the other difference is the McCreary's have a lot of grooves vs the GY. This may not be an issue but for off-airport use it can result in more rocks/pebbles thrown up.
I think I would do the 26" GY "blimp" tires and get them approved. Pretty hard to wear a set of these out.
Just bite the bullet and put on some of those AkBushwheels. :)

I am using Condors on my Maule and they hold up better than anything I've ever used.

If you get the Landes approval for 8.50 BW's instead of GY's, I'll buy

Michelins! Hoo Boy, how much are them puppies?

It seems my 8.50 tube procurement problem has gone away, but I gave up two years ago after waiting 4 months for them.

YMMV

Quit screwin' around.

If you guys would just get a set of 29's from AKBW you'd do away with all this petty bickering.
They've got'em in stock, mounted AND balanced, and the FedEx truck pulls up daily to whisk them to your location in a matter of days. Or if the weather permits and you are so inclined, Joseph just happens to be almost in the geographic CENTER of the northwest. How convenient is that! And get this... they take CREDIT CARDS!
Tubes AND shred factor - 10+.... included!
The ability to roll (over rocks) with style......priceless.
