Anchorage in town Moose

Moose in the Anchorage area near airport at Point Woronzof. Used to see 60 in bulls wondering around lake hood in the fall. Hunters going out drop hunts went crazy seeing them right in town 8)

Moose in town are typically range from attraction to nuisance depending how they are behaving and whether they are in your garden. Unfortunately, sometimes they are a hazard like when they try to cross the road at the wrong time.

Re: Anchorage in town Moose

Are you seeing similar moose numbers in Alaska compared to years previous?

I gotta say, in BC since I was kid, I'm seeing fewer and fewer moose. I see deer now, which I never did growing up, and elk where there didn't used to be elk, but very few moose.

Lots of people saying the wolves and ticks are reducing the moose numbers. Winters have been mild, hard to pinpoint a reason.

Re: Anchorage in town Moose

We have fewer in our little corner. We had huge numbers in the late - 90's/'00's. The range carrying capacity became a real concern so ADF&G spent several years with very liberal cow hunt permit numbers. The numbers are certainly down now so what was an "any bull" area is now a spike/fork or 50" area. Season opened the 15th of Sept and there have been 4 animals taken. Back in the day, the 40 bull quota was often met in 24 hours. The quota is now about a dozen.

We too are seeing more wolves and to some extent coyotes. The wolves are swimming to an island about 3/4 mile across the water and working on the deer there. No real pressure on the wolves, maybe a half dozen a year are harvested by locals.

Flew from Yakima to Anchorage and didn't see a single moose until I arrived at Lake Hood.

Dang, that is a fine specimen.

They really know how to grow 'em in Alaska and the Yukon.
