This was in the news today!

I was just now going to post that. Very disheartening. The article seems to indicate that it was an airport authority pickup, but I wonder. Was it crossing midfield? A tenant?

Northgraves said the truck was authorized to be on the airport grounds and was driven by a pilot. He would not identify the driver but said it was not a county vehicle, nor a county employee.

That is just tragic.


What in the heck do they need to be out there doing in the dark!!!!

The Cessna 172 was heading north on the runway early Friday evening the Knox County Regional Airport when it struck a pickup truck that was crossing the runway, authorities said.

The first people to the scene tried unsuccessfully to pull one of the occupants from the burning wreckage, said John Newcomb, president of the Downeast Air airline services company, who was among those who tried to help.

The victims were one Mainer and two people from out of state, Knox County Chief Deputy Sheriff Tim Carroll said. He said authorities were working to notify relatives before announcing the victims' names.

Officials said the truck was authorized to be on the airport grounds and was driven by a pilot who was picking up a pilot who had parked another plane in a hangar.

It was a club plane based in Bangor and was run by the college. 2 college kids and one grad from last year. The plane was 3/4 of the way down a 5k foot long runway...hit the truck and lost it's horizontal stab, continued flying (sorta) and dug er in. There's nothing requiring calls on a radio from either the truck or plane at an uncontrolled field (may be a state thing however) there will be lots of questions to be answered but it's a sad day up here in what has been a deadly few years in Maine and the Maine coast especially.

I'm not sure about other airports in Idaho. But at the Caldwell airport, to be authorized to drive any vehicle besides an aircraft within certain zones (runway, Taxiway A, and some ramp area's), your vehicle must have a flashing yellow light on top of the roof.

same here or a red and white checkered flag...plus permission and under control of the tower if at a towered airport. but that's standard everywhere...
