Another F-U from Uncle Sam (DME fee getting raised)

For those that are unfamiliar, this Oct 1st the Feds are raising the DME fee for the AP exam to $1000.00.

Boy am I glad my airplanes don't have Distance Measuring Equipment or Auto Pilots

Seriously though, what do those acronyms stand for??

Serious? I was going to knock that out next spring. Looks like I'll have to budget for it now.

OMG DUH (not an acronym) LOL #-o

$1000 seems reasonable, as a certified A&P should make at least 20 times that his first year in the business

I know you're probably not getting it to work as an A&P, just being facetious. I sure wish I had been documenting all my work on airplanes over the years, might have enough by now to get signed off to take the test. If you're going for it good luck!! Would be nice to be able to sign your own work off...

Yep... Sorry. DME is designated mechanic examiner. Oral and practical for A&P exam. Used to be a bunch cheaper until the Gov decided to keep killing aviation.

That is interesting, actually. It used to be that the DPE (Designated Pilot Examiner) fees were set by the individual DPE. Typically, every DPE in the same area charged the same, but from district to district they'd vary.

I wonder if the FAA has standardized DPE fees as well.

I think I paid about $50 a piece back in the early 1980s. 21 months of schooling cost $7500ish and you got your A&P with an associates degree. Started out making $10/hr on Merrill Field, thought I had died and gone to heaven!

I am a DMIR ( that's Designated Manufacturing Inspection Representative ) for my company... From all the online courses and one on one training I have done with other DMIR'S and DAR's there is nothing from the FAA that has a fee scale... Everything I have been told is that as an individual you can charge a fee but it is not mandated by the Feds... As far as I know that is with all designees... All designees have to apply for the designation and the FAA decides weather or not the individual is qualified and that having that individual in the area they want to work does not add a undue burden on the FAA... Designees DO NOT receive payment from the FAA... In fact, we have to pay fees for initial and recurrent training to keep our designation plus with some designees ( like myself ) we get yearly over site by the MIDO at our facility...

Thanks, Brian, that was the policy in past.

In some districts, you MIGHT be able to talk a FSDO type into administering the exam, and that is free. Certain certifications some FSDOs hold dear, for example, initial CFI. Mine was with an Ops Inspector, and this is still true where I taught.

As to fees charged by a Designee, you couldn't pay me enough to go through that crap. At one point, I went through the training to be a DPE, hot down to the appointment and opted out.
Believe it or not, those folks earn those fees, by putting up with the FAA BS they're required to undergo.

Opinion only, but I wouldn't want that job no matter the fees.
