Another sad day in Oregon

A small plane crashed near Albany, killing three people on board, authorities said.
The accident happened about ten miles south of Salem, just after 10 a.m.

Mike Fergus with the Federal Aviation Administration said the plane took off from the Salem Airport around 10:05 a.m. en route to Klamath, Ore., via Eugene. He was not sure if more than three people were on board.

He said the plane was last spotted on radar at 13,000 feet at 10:17a.m. Then, about two minutes later, the plane went down. There was no verbal radio contact, Fergus said.

KGW Meteorologist Dave Salesky said flying conditions were rough during the time of the crash. He said the pilot was probably maneuvering through rain and snow which may have put a layer of ice on the plane's wings. Visibility was about ten miles.

Looks like it came almost straight down. This is a horribly day to be flying a small GA plane. Don't mess with the weather, nothing good can come from it.

Condolences to the family's.

My coworker who sits just down from me came over. One of his friends was on board. Apparently he was a new pilot but I doubt he was the one flying.

Hits pretty close to home.

Life is good. Life is better with wings.

I wonder if he didn't pick up some ice. They said he was at 13,000 ft when it came down. They reported that the engine was sputterig but I don't know about that. Too bad for all the families.

Looks like a Cirrus to me. Is that a parachute? Looks like it landed fairly flat, no skid marks in the dirt.

Lancair ES, according to KGW.

Also, Salesky the weatherman quoted is a Champ driver, so he would get what constitutes rough weather for us.

The Oregonian report says it's a Lancair and some witness thought it spun down from "3,000 feet." 13,000 may have been a typo. Time will tell. Very sad.

I talked to an instructor on Friday night that had time in that plane with the pilot/owner. He admitted to me that during instruction emphasis was focused on take offs and landings and not so much on stall/spin recovery. This was at the pilots request as I was told. Sad sad story.

God bless those souls lost, and those families that lost them.

My heart felt sarrow for the family, but for the pilot, I can not think of a better way to go.Its a hell of lot better way to go than crashing a car in the desert or cancer, some pilots have all the luck, doing what they love.

I think I can!!!

I don't know about that-- "doing what they love" sounds real good, but I'm betting that the last minute or two of that fatal flight they were scared shitless & screaming. Not my idea of a good way to go- I'd rather die in bed, either asleep or (preferably) in the saddle-- if you know what I mean.
Actually, if I can't take it all with me, I plan to live forever......

Yeah me too. But what would the horse your riding think?

For me the Big "C" scares the crap out of me. I had a good friend, hunting buddy, co-worker go at 49. 6'2" about 225 pounds, was about 125 Lbs when it ended. Not a memory I care for, and not the way I want to go out. My Dad went by way of Alzheimers. I don't care for that option either. Hey new thread! " How to go out" Jeez how depressing. :?

Did you guys see the movie "Second Hand Lions"? It involved a nice red home built biplane and a barn. One way to go!

I have never liked the saying "at least he died doing what the loved" I think Elvis died doing what he liked to do.

I guess that is why I spend all my money on my flying. I love what I do. I only hope that I die of old age and not by some stupik mistake while I am flying me and others. Why live like a hermit and save your money? I have never seen a hurst pulling a trailer full of money. I try to help the economly all I can. Yes I would imagine that last few minutes would not have been fun. Bob
