Any Cessna 180 Drivers in San Diego?

Been a long time lurker, sucking up everything the site has to offer. Was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, before heading off to join the Navy. Spent 20 years in, most of it in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) (bomb squad).

Live in San Diego now, though I just dropped my daughter off for her freshman year at University of Alaska, Anchorage (parents still live there). Own a 46 J3, have a little over 340 hrs (300+ Cubs/Super Cubs). Flew her to Sandpoint, ID from San Diego last year, needless to say, made for a long trip.

Hoping to link up with someone in Southern California with a 180. Have two growing boys and looking for a 4 place taildragger with a load carrying capability. Love the 180s (have spent many a day circling Lake Hood checking them out when I am back to visit parents). J3 is good for playing in the local area, would like to stretch my legs and explore some further destinations.

Would love to pick some local folks brains and maybe get a ride before I go airplane shopping. I have seen one 180 at KMYF, but other than that one, they seem to be pretty scarce in these parts.

Cheers,
Randy

Randy, I am in Wa now but will be back in S CA first part of October. There are several of us flying the slower smaller planes like Avids, Kitfox's, Zeniths that fly a lot together, always room for a J3, Most are based out of Corona and Hemet. There are some Maul guys in the area and a couple of 180's that I am sure over time will hook up with you

Saw this one in Oceanside a couple weeks back. No idea who it belongs to but the airport manager said the Feds were out talking to the guy the day before. Sounds like he could be one of us...Image

Re: Any Cessna 180 Drivers in San Diego?

Thanks for the responses. Been hectic at work so slow to respond.

Rob: Did not get your PM. Feel free to drop me a line at [email protected]. Would be great to hear from you.

Big John: Please shoot me an email when you get into town. Make runs all the time up to hemet for breakfast. Been into Chino with son going to Planes of Fame museum, have flown over but not dropped into Corona.

aktahoe1: Have not been into Oceanside recently but thinking about heading up this weekend to get checked out in club Citabria. Will keep my eyes peeled.

Still looking and hopeful to link up with someone soon. Contemplating pursuing IFR, would love to do it start to finish in my own 180 but realize finding the right bird can take some time. Just got to be patient [-o<

Cheers,
Randy

Randy, Come to Fallbrook (L18) sometime in the Cub. I am based there with my PA-11. So far, we have my PA-11, a Legend Cub, a Supercub, and a Carbon Cub...all in the J-3 paint scheme. I need to get all the Cubs together for a picture.

Aviator,

Will do!. Drop me a text at 619-565-5911 when you plan on being at the airport. Hope to gets lots of flying in this weekend.

Almost bought a Legend Cub from Johnny Carson's (of the Tonight Show fame) nephew last year out of KFUL. Really enjoyed the Legend. Started my primary training in one here in San Diego several years ago but someone ground-looped it and ruined it fore the rest of us!

Have dropped into Fallbrook several times. Like the carrier landing feel coming in. Did end up taking a wrong turn when taxiing back out from fuel pit onto road coming in... felt like a dork.

Haha! You are not the first to do that! I have seen others do the same thing. I heard about an 172 driver go all the way to the gate even. :) I am heading to Reno but I will save your number and text you for some Cub flying.

Re: Any Cessna 180 Drivers in San Diego?

My folks retired to Fallbrook in 1986 and lived there for about 20 years before tipping over. When visiting them, I dropped by the airport a couple times -- drove through the gate on the east side & down into the west side of the airport, which kind of freaked my dad out, but never saw too much going on. Wrong day and/or wrong time, I guess. Dropped in & wandered around the Oceanside airport once, looked like a cool little place but I understand they've had more than their share of trouble from airplane noise haters.
