Gary and all,
I think a real sleeper is Cayuse Creek up off of the Kelly Creek / Noth Fork Clearwater Drainage. Have often been the only one up there, despite road access. Decent fishing and hunting. Depending on your load, the trees can start to feel kind of tall on departure. Matt

Re: Any other cool spots around Northern Idaho

I'm not getting much info on Western Montana or Eastern Washington. Not too much good stuff there? We will probably be flying up Western Montana. Probably sart camping at Moose Creek, and working or way around from there.

Thanks Gary

 Let me sweeten the pot a little. There is a couple margs in it for whoever gives me the best tip on the coolest/most intesting place to fly to. :) =D>

Camped on the field at Polson MT near the Flathead River. Courtesy van to take you into town or to Flathead Lake. Shower and computer in the FBO. Not backcountry flying but was very comfortable.

Re: Any other cool spots around Northern Idaho

Here's a spot for you, not really a camping spot but a great place anyway, Pete usually has a bunch of old airplanes from over the towards the west side come and stay a week or so every summer. Had about 20 planes sitting there last year.
Guest ranch-Dude ranch what ever you want to call it
http://www.bullhill.com
Bull Hill is just NW of Colville (63S) in eastern WA. Really hot right now my wife says??
Pete has a nice private strip that you can land on, If you don't like it for some reason he will bring his 185 to town and pick you up.
63S has nice pilots lounge and computer, phone, barbecue, Should be an ol boy from NC there for the summer flyin a mixmaster for the DNR, Plays great Blues (Big John Shearer) if not playin, great guy to bs with.
Have fun on your run and keep us updated.

Since we're talking Margs,
How about Lang Creek Brewery? www.langcreekbrewery.com They are on a strip in a valley to the west of Kalispell area. They used to have a fly in once a year, but I think they still welcome drop ins by airplane. Not sure if camping on the field is still welcome or if the company has grown and thoughts changed?? Worth a call to update, though.

That would be too bad. I will give them a call tomorrow. They still have a website, and it sounds like great stop. I see a strip called Campbell in that area. Don't know if it is theirs or not. I will see. Also got a recommendation for West Fork Lodge which looked pretty good.

Just returned from "Idaho Backcountry experience " 9 days and a sore back ! 180-185 shindig was in Garden Valley week or so back- about 70 180/185's showed up for 2 day event. I went around to several of the backcountry strips and had a ball. Camping get a GOOD ground PAD to put under your sleeping bag ! I came back with a sore back -needed more cushion and heat on the bottom. Ate a lot of SPAM burgers and breakfast bars.Water is always avaiable -most will be have to filtered or boiled . Bugs everywhere so pack some anti mosquito spray or cream. Lots of critters about !

Re: Any other cool spots around Northern Idaho

Lang Cr. is closed, and the brewery is out of business :( :(

Bull Hill is a working ranch and not a restaurant, and is only for guests who are spending some time there.

Sullivan Lake is on my list, thanks for that one.

Bill, sounds like you had a good time for the most part. I use an inflatble air mattress from Wally World. $20. and doesn't take up much space. Works good in the pond also. We bring waterand margs. I put a marg out for the skeeters and they leave me alone. :D

Yes, it is the Campbell Ranch strip. Private, but John and Sandy held many "invitation only" fly in breakfasts there. My only near miss was going in there, when an uninvited, and unaware, 172 driver made right traffic while announcing on a different freq than John specifies on the invitation. He was above my wing until his left main appeared about 10 feet above my windshield. We dove to the right, came around and landed, and witnessed him getting an asschewin'. He said he never saw us. And he didn't stay long.

John loved making beer, but in the end, like me, hated the beer business. Anyway, the strip is private.

Re: Any other cool spots around Northern Idaho

Shortfileder,
No Monte's not the same strip, Pete's is on up the valley past Zema's and on the other side of the Columbia on a nice flat deck about 200 above the river.
If I was anywhere close you could stop by and take a swin in Lake Roosevelt, maybe try to throw you off an inner tube,  Have an old ski boat vdive with a 496BB. If you get someone brave enough you can make them levitate about 2' in the air but things go bad out of ground affect. [-X

63S is having a fly in breakfast on the 7th of Aug, Buy your steak on Friday(6th) night and cook it on the big barbi, they have all the fixins for everything else. Not much of a place to camp but Dave is working on it, has 3 big couches??

Keep Smilin :D

Probably be back down at JC by the 6-7th, but may run back up??? I've always been pretty "into" skiing. Used to do some tournament skiing when I was younger, and have skiied as fast as 95, I was told. The BB sounds like fun.

Anyways, thanks for the info

Re: Any other cool spots around Northern Idaho

Hey Gary,

Sorry I didn't see this thread and am probably too late to help, but others suggested what I would have.

We fueled at St. Mary's for $3.98 if I remember right.
Huckleberry icecream, pie, and lemonade all at Elk River (not to be confused with Elk City)
Huckleberry pancakes at Elk City and a chat with Curtis is definately worth it.
Magee is a great place to camp.

Hope you have a great trip.
