Anyone AK bound this week from the east side ?

I'm meandering my way from Ohio to AK on the eastern route. I left late last week from NC. Currently waiting for a break in the weather over middle Ohio. Camping and lodging on and off.

Just curious if anyone else is going that way. Also: I've been on the site for several years reading posts from members daily. I hope to run in to some of you and put faces to names.

How about you put a screenshot of your planned route up. Those of us on your route can speak out with suggestions or offers.

This route was suggested by Brown Bear and confirmed by MTV as the best route:
Cross in to Canada at Scobey MT. / Coronach Sk. [ckk3] ;
then Swift current Sk. [cyyn] ;
Wetaskiwin Ab. [cex3] ;
Grande prairie Ab. [cyqu] ;
Ft Nelson [cyye] ;
Toad river[cbky] ;
Watson lake [cyqh] ;
Whitehorse [cyxy]
Then Northway Alaska and then Tok Alaska

Re: Anyone AK bound this week from the east side ?

We are at our place just north of Carcross Yukon until the end of the month. Travelling back to Ft Nelson (Gordons Field, CBL3) on the 31st.

I have just put in a 1000' strip at our place in the Yukon. 9 air miles north of Carcross. We also have a lot on the Carcross airfield. You are welcome at any of the above.

PM me for contact info if you plan on stopping by.

FWIW - the route from Ft Nelson to Watson Lake via Toad River is great if the weather is good. If it is down I recommend staying towards the Liard River. Even when the weather is very poor, you can generaly get through following the Nelson river to the Liard and the Liard through to Watson Lake. You catch back up with the highway at Liard Hot Springs.

Hope you have good tie downs for when you are tied down at Swift Current. Damn it's windy there... haha. In Grande Prairie, fuel is 7 cents/lt cheaper at Aeroshell, and I personally quite like them. If you need any mx help when in the area, (hopefully you dont) let me know. I'm just northwest of Grande Prairie in Hythe. I'd be happy to help you out.

Thanks David. I came across a mx issue last night that I need to address this morning. I must have landed heavy on my tail wheel because my steering chain spring keepers were stretched out like paper clips. I'm in farm country and luckily there is a store here called TSC (tractor supply company). I'm sure they sell approved parts for the dusters ;) . It's nice to know that someone is willing to help out. I'll be in your area. Perhaps we'll meet regardless.

I'm in Dixon Illinois and the weather looks right for the first time in days. Next planned stop is Badlands National park (there'll be some stops along the way for fuel and pilot relief).

Re: Anyone AK bound this week from the east side ?

I just flew a similar route a couple of weeks ago although I chose to not cross at Scobey because I had concerns about the condition and length of the runway and density altitude. Without a current pilot report about the runway, I chose to make my way on over to Cut Bank and crossed into Lethbridge. The most expensive fuel that I bought was in Red Deer but the exchange rate is in favor of US money right now so nothing was unbearable. I fought weather all along the way but hope it's better for you.

I did overnight in Beaver Creek, not being able to get over the border into Northway because of low ceilings. I kept US customs informed with frequent phone calls and they were appreciative and worked with me to coordinate my arrival the next day. I had no prior info on Beaver Creek but found it to be a good option to stop. Car gas is available in town but you will need jugs and a ride. Hotels offered rides. The CARS station closed at 3, which was my cut off time to make it over to meet US customs anyway, so the CARS lady offered me and another couple who were also stuck a ride to the hotel. I would stop again if needed.

If you do cross the border at Scobey would you post a pilot report? I couldn't find anything. I suppose I could have called the customs agents at the border but I wasn't confident that they would know how to describe the runway condition.
