Anyone fitted a Landes fork to a C182?

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Anyone fitted a Landes fork to a C182?

'afternoon all

I'm based on a grass field in the UK which gets a bit soft from time to time. I'm considering a Landes fork and bigger wheels/tyres but I have a few questions re brakes etc. Has anyone here done the conversion? If so what else did you have to buy apart from the $2k ish kit from Airglass and how much extra did you have to pay (Wheels? Axles for the mains? Calipers?)

Many thanks in advance

I saw a 182 in Reno with 29" mains and 8.50 nose wheel, John?

I just installed the Landes fork kit on my 182 this last winter. Luckly, I already had the proper wheels and axles. A friend of mine gave me two new 850's, so I bought two more from another friend. My total cost is around $2,600.00. My mechanic had to cut about two inches off the strut tube, also. I have a photo of my 58 182 in my photo gallery, Pat.

( I also run these Bushwheels on our Maule as well. ) We went with the double puck brakes for about $1100, you can find the cost of the wheels/tires at http://www.akbushwheel.com. I love flying this set up. It rides pretty level, just a little nose high. I do not remember what the Landes cost.

Thanks, do you have a source or part number for the double puck brakes? I assume there's an STC for them somewhere.

Thanks again

I have the 8.50's on my 172 and agree with John about the "look". I will be talking to Wup at the Alaska Airmen Trade Show about some bushwheels for my 172.

On my plane, the McCauley brake caliper rubbed the inside of the mains. Switching to Cleaveland brakes cured the problem for us.

John,

You need to pump up that nose strut, then clamp a short section of stiff hose around the strut to prevent full retraction and to soften the compression. Works great.

I agree with John about the 29's, too (my SuperCub friends agree, too). But, I'll wait tell I wear out the 850's, get some more time (I'm still in the training process) and better asphalt landings! Pat.

If your worried about pavement wear on the Air Hawk 29's, don't. I just put a set of "unbuffed" ones on my Maule and I assure you they will go many thousands of pavement landings. There is at least twice the tread depth of 8.50's.
I don't have a throwing rocks from the tread problem down here. If you land where there is a lot of small gravel, then "buffed" tires are probably for you.

Re: Anyone fitted a Landes fork to a C182?

After much searching and trying to get by without robbing the bank, I went with the Landes conversion STC and am very satisfied. It is installed on my 59 Cessna 182 B. I run 8.50's on the main s and received a field approval from the Montana FSDO to run an 8.00 on the nose. We had to cut 3" off the nose fork and it is a great set-up. Invested around $4500 in the STC and the cost of a new nose wheel, new tires all around, and A&P expense....a great, expensive improvement. Try Hitchcock Aviation in Idaho for the parts necessary...great service and back up....

Jim at Hutt Aviaiton in Minden, NV has all of the STC's or can get them for yoUr nose forks, Dual puck brakes, etc.

I have a 182 with 29's for main's and an 8.50 on the nose with Landis frok, dual puck brakes, etc.

Jim does great work as well! Aside from that, as a maintanacne customer to Hutt you get .40 cents a gallon off your fuel. Not a bad deal.

Good luck.

Now how come the nose strut has to be cut down?

Tom,

Because the FORK is longer, to accomodate a larger diameter tire. If you didn't do so, you'd touch nose wheel first every time.

After I installed the fork on my 182, the CG was way aft which caused the nose wheel to wheelie and the front wheel did not even touch the ground when parked in the hangar. I think my mechanic had to cut off about 2 inches and the CG is fine now.

There's some more floating around here. Might have to do some searching.

58Skylane beat me to it. Here it is from the other side:

It's on my eventual upgrade list but with a field approval for a 7.00 for the nose.

Re: Anyone fitted a Landes fork to a C182?

You don't have to cut the strut tube. There are two struts, long stroke and short stroke. You use the short stroke with the new fork and no cutting required or desired. Keep the prop up with air pressure in strut. And it is all just a log book entry due to superseeded part numbers. If you are buying more than that you are helping the economy.
