Anyone have current conditions for Mineral Canyon (UT75)?

My husband and I are planning to fly into Mineral Canyon (UT75) in Moab the last week of March but have not been there before. Has anyone been there recently and can provide information on the condition of the airstrip? Any information on obtaining permission to land there?

I don't know the current condition, it can change and be soft depending on rains. No permission is required. What aircraft will you be flying? I'm in western Nebraska, what will your route of flight be?

The strip can be semi-flooded in early spring depending on temps and run-off. Its been a wet year already.

I haven't been there this spring but we have had quite a bit of moisture lately.
Right now I would suspect a little muddy.

Was at cny yesterday. Pretty wet. And having seen the evidence of how soupy that strip had been a couple years ago I wouldn't try it today. Having said that a little wind and sunshine could change things quite fast. Maybe see what happens closer to your date?

Edited to add that it should be a considerable runoff year with the snow we have on the West Slope of CO.

We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. flew over today, standing water on the strip

Permission not needed for non-commercial flights.

Dark spots = wet.

Lots of other great options for camping nearby at other strips if it's wet

I recommend you talk to the folks at Red Tail Aviation at PUC or CNY before you go. They have always been helpful to me and may have good info on the condition of the strips. Have a great trip!

A little late to the party here but the new UBCP website has a built-in Airstrip Condition Reporting feature.

https://utahbackcountrypilots.org/airports/view/MINERALCANYON

Since we've just launched the website, the system restricts creating reports to dues-paying members as a preventive measure against spam and abuse. We're developing the system that will allow anyone to submit reports currently. Viewing reports will always be open to anyone.

We're encouraging anyone, good or bad, already a report in or not, to submit one.

Just wanted to post a long overdue followup and thank you to the folks that provided responses. I'm KSchiller's other half. We did talk to Red Tail Aviation who confirmed our evaluation of the strip during an overflight a few days beforehand - standing water in areas, so no go. We did a low approach and enjoyed that immensely though!

As a consolation we visited Horseshoe Canyon and Angel Point which were both in excellent condition and lots of fun. The scenery in that part of the world is amazing and quite a treat for a couple of flatlanders like us!

Please make sure to update the UBCP site if you’re a member. It now has something similar to shortfield.com for updating airstrips as well as adding pics.
