Anyone near Del Rio, TX

Hello guys, just wondering if there are any BCP'er guys near Del Rio. I am down here for the Thanksgiving holidays visiting my son. He is currently in pilot training at Laughlin AFB and since he has very little to no time to spend with his poor ol dad I was thinking of trying to get out and explore the area a little. Anyone around please give me a shout and maybe we could do a meet and greet. Maybe do a little flying would be nice also.
Thanks,
Keith

Re: Anyone near Del Rio, TX

I live in Iraan, 2F0.

We are having fried turkey on Thursday at about 2:00 PM. It is a 2 hour drive from Del Rio, or a little less than 1 hour flight. You and yours are welcome to come eat. We will have plenty. Probably be able to find a booze drink also if you desire.

I am sure there will be some flying during the weekend also.

Let me know. I will send phone number via PM.

I'm just north of you a little ways. If you can get to San Angelo Wed. morning, I'll pick you up and take you around our area and up to the Panhandle. I'm flying up to one of my job sites. It's east of Lubbock and off the Caprock. There's some pretty country to see around the Caprock. I'm just going up and back, but could show you lots of ranch country and some pretty neat ranch airports around home. Have you back in Angelo by late afternoon. WX is forecast to be good for the rest of the week.

I bet your son knows about San Angelo. Lots of Laughlin flights come through there.

Let me know if you think that's something you want to try to do. I'd be glad to have the company.

Re: Anyone near Del Rio, TX

58skylane, You are close...he was at Embry-Riddle in Prescott but graduated there in May. Was commisioned into the Air Force and selected for pilot training with his first assignment here at Laughlin AFB, TX. He is currently training in the Texan T-6II.

flyer (Dick), See above....he is currently in the Texan T-6II. From what he has said to me so far I think he is NOT wanting fighters. He is thinking more long term and wants to go multi-engine or transport I guess. He thinks this will help more in the future if he wants to fly for an airline/cargo carrier. Feel sorry for the kid, 12+ hours everyday of studying and/or flying. Just hope he can make it through without getting washed out. :(

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll try and contact the guys that PM'd me.

Sounds good. Good luck to your boy! Maybe he'll be flying a C5 with Joey someday? Wouldn't that be something.

Hunter

When I went thru, I trained in T-37s and T-38s. That was a long time ago. I hope he does not pink any rides. It is not easy. We had almost half of our class wash out.

If there is anything that I can do for him in the way of advice or my experience, have him e-mail me. I flew during the Vietnam War.

Wish him good luck from me.

Re: Anyone near Del Rio, TX

Dick,
Thank you for the kind offer. I honestly haven't gotten much time to actually talk to him since I got here on Saturday. He leaves at 6am and doesn't get home til 6-7pm everyday and as soon as he walks in the door he shovels down the supper his wonderful wife makes for him, then straight into his study room to study til 10 or so, then goes to bed.
I'm not sure what you mean by "I hope he does not pink any rides." He did state that he flew superbly today and landed so good he didn't even know he had touched down. His IP said he would have pogo'd (soloed) him if it hadn't been for one problem....he did toss his cookies. Went in to flight medicine (?) and was spun. Told me he can't figure it out, has zero problems with high 'G' manuvers but then it hit him. Might be the + to - stuff that caused it. I am just speculating.
Thanks again guys for the offers and the help. I grew up a dirt poor farm kid and to have my son accomplish what he has is the highlight of my life. Just walking across base yesterday watching the planes fly, I had a huge lump in my throat and tears of pride rolling down my cheeks. Makes lifes obstacles and heartaches insignificant when one realizes that they have done right in the way their children were raised. No greater joy in life than to be a proud parent.
JugheadF15 I am definitely going to try and meet up with you as soon as I can.
Thanks again everyone.

Re: Anyone near Del Rio, TX

Just a thought, Keith. I take it he has to be in perfect shape? But what about his diet? I know when I was training in my 182, I had to be careful what I ate for breakfast and lunch. Some foods almost made me toss my cookies, too. Even during the simplest maneuvers like steep turns and stalls.

I would think that the physical demands is right up there with professional athletes. I've worked with professional motocross and road racers for the last 19 years and most of them are very picky of what they eat.

Here's kind of a run down of some of these guys diet (especially at the track for the weekend)......
1. Grilled chicken (easy or no spicy seasoning).
2. Plain pasta with just olive oil and little salt (sea salt is best).
3. Pan fry, steamed, or grilled "fresh" veggies seasoned only with olive oil, sea salt and pepper.
4. Whole grain wheat breads

These are the top fruits these guys like to eat through out the day......
1. Banana's
2. Avocado's
3. Kiwi fruit
4. Oranges

And I just thought of something else and I'll PM you..........

Re: Anyone near Del Rio, TX

58Skylane,
Thanks for the in depth diet info and the PM info you sent. I will let him look at it. He has seemed to gain a bit since getting here. I think the study requirements and training/flying time consumes 99.9% of his time. He does get out to run when he can.

To all posters........As an update....he informed his wife and I that he WILL BE SOLOING TODAY!!!!! Whoooo Hoooo!! Actually in about an hour.
I guess I need to get back down to the flight line so I can watch and take some pictures. Apparantly they have a dunk tank he gets thrown into also. :) Unfortunately he is quite a bit bigger than me, so I guess dad doesn't get the honor of throwing him in.

I honestly have been overcome with the responses everyone on here has given me. I can't say how much it is appreciated and how heartfelt my thank yous are! I am a member on several aviation specific forums and I have to say that this site has got the rest beat...hands down!! It seems to have the most diverse collection of different types of planes/owners/pilots and such a wide range of experience which makes this site so pleassurable to read. I try to contribute when I 'think' I might be able to add a bit of knowledge (LOL) or experience to help out the fellow posters. I have met several good friends on here and that list just keeps getting bigger.

Keith, Tell your son congrats. I stopped into his flight room this morning, but he was briefing for his first flight. This afternoon I had to convert some 100LL into fun.

Happy Thanksgiving.
