AOPA article ROP vs LOP

In this month's AOPA Pilot magazine the "Dogfight" column is discussing the arguments of running ROP vs LOP. One of the authors describes pulling the mixture back until you feel the engine running rough and then increasing it back slightly. The following picture is used as an illustration showing fuel flow at ROP operation in a Cirrus. Hmmm, for the life of me I cannot figure out why his engine may have been running rough??? Not to mention his ALT 1 is INOP and ALT 2 is on the fritz draining the battery...it should be producing 20 amps.

Its like the old stock racers. Cut the fan/alternator belt on the last lap to cut engine load and get more power. What would fuel burn be if he had the alternator pulling?

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

Vacuum pump went out on my O-235 Long eze, Removed it and installed a blocking plate, seemed like I gained 25rpm.
