Apollo 11

I've been sitting around today instead of being productive and a show about the moon missions came on. It's called In the Shadow of the Moon. I got completely sucked in.

Super cool details I'd never heard about the Apollo missions! Like how Armstrong had to take control of the lunar module and manually (semi-automatic control I'm assuming is something like AFCS) flew to a better touchdown site because their original site was strewn with boulders.

Apollo Astronauts were Backcountry Pilots in every sense of the phrase.

It looks like someone spent some good time on the Wikipedia page. If you don't get the chance to see the show, it seems to have a lot of details.

Re: Apollo 11

Harrison Schmidt came to the 717th Med Deg. Helicopter Ambulance in Santa Fe pressing the flesh during his senatorial campaign one drill weekend. Finding out that he had completed Officers Rotary Wing Aviation Course in preparation for the lunar lander, I tried to recruit him as a weekend warrior. I got a long pause. He actually considered it. The requirement for a combat arms (Infantry, Artillery, Armor, etc.) officer basic course may have scared him off.

I have the disc. I revisit it every now and again. I never get tired of it. I was a mercury program junkie when I was a grasshopper and I just continued on with the rest of the space program. All captivating to me.
