Arctic Flying with Bud Helmerick

Came across this on the Seaplane Pilots' Association website and thought some here might enjoy this. Some amazing early Alaska footage here!

Bud wrote a book called "Last of the Bush Pilots". Bud was a friend and a for real bush pilot, no doubt. The book is a good read.

And., by the way, JJ Frey, who narrates the first part of that video, is truly an aviation legend in his own right. JJ was Senior Vice President of EDO float division for several decades. He is a walking (just got two new knees last year and is back to playing doubles tennis) talking history lesson on float operations.

He is always at OSH in the EDO/Kenmore booth, and at the AK Airmens show with EDO.

if you're at one of those shows, stop by and introduce yourself and ask a question or two......you'll thoroughly enjoy the visit, trust me.

That book, (which I just got another copy) was the second aviation book after Chuck Yeagers autobiography I read as a kid.

I was probably 10 when I read it. It opened up my imagination to what feats were possible with airplanes in the bush. I just remember thinking, that would be so awesome to land an airplane in the remote places they did. I never forgot about that book.

The book was always on the bookshelf at our house. When I started flying I asked my mom to look for it but she couldn't find it. Santa got me a new copy for Christmas this year. Great book!

Bud was my friend, mentor when I hit Barrow as an ink- wet commercial pilot, and taught me how to fit in with the folk of the Arctic. They don't make many like him any more.
