Re: arctic submarine pix

Is the Deep Siren messaging system the one that interferes with the whale communication/hearing frequencies? I remember reading about a system that crossed into that range, kind of like what we fear with interference in the GPS band with cross over new cell phone systems. Otherwise this is great technology. Thanks for the post.

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Great pictures, but in case you didn't get it the first twenty times:

Using a digital Deep Siren tactical messaging system and a simpler underwater telephone, officials from the Navy's Arctic Submarine Laboratory at the camp were able to help the USS New Hampshire submarine find a relatively ice-free spot to surface and evacuate a sailor stricken with appendicitis. That was so cool man. I'd put that in my bucket list just for the experience.

I think your thinking of the ELF system. One of the 2 antenna arays was just north if me, I think the other was in the UP of Michigan. The tree huggers protested & sabotaged it for years. Don't think it was ever fully up & running. A friend of my parents bought the poles after they tore it down (i think about 30 miles of poles) hauled them to Mt & built a cabin out in Red Lodge. I've got 3 of them for a gate over my driveway.

Awesome pictures. Would be cool to see a sub surface & pop thru the ice!

Blessed are the curious, for they shall have great adventures!

I thought that the ice cap was gone due to global warming. Pix must have been taken a long time ago.
