Area behind Mt Susitna / Beluga Lake

Is anyone here familiar with the area between Mt Susitna and Beluga Lake? I can't for the life of me find someone that doesn't just laugh at me when I ask. Literally. I went to a (unnamed) shop here at Lake Hood and the two old timers laughed at me when I said I wanted to fly out to Theodore River in the area up behind Mt Susitna. I am hoping to get information on where to land in the area basically due west of the most southern point of Sleeping Lady to about due west of midpoint of Sleeping Lady along Theodore River and west. I have found one "airstrip" of "indeterminate length or condition" about 9 miles N by NE but thats it.

Any pictures, descriptions, information, help would be wonderful. I plan on flying in there over the next few weeks in my 170A and I just need some serious information that might help me out. (pictures are a super plus).

Thanks in advance, and I will post everything I get of the area once I go.

Re: Area behind Mt Susitna / Beluga Lake

That's the general area I am looking at, to be more specific there is a lake and an airstrip 14 miles Southeast of Judd Lake that I am hoping someone has pictures of or can tell me about. Is there an airstrip at Judd Lake?

The Lat/Long for the airstrip is 61"31.076' N 151"23.876'W

Also, where is this Theodore River Strip that you mentioned?

Re: Area behind Mt Susitna / Beluga Lake

u pretty much just land on the road next to the theodore river people have hit trees though so im just telling u i wouldnt do it. I also just got my plane and only started flying it in the past few months. I know the area really well and have been flying out there my whole life. where are u exactly trying to go too? or are you just exploring a new area? I also take snowmachines in there in the winter all the way from KGB road anyway im flying out to bristol bay for a few months in early may so if u want me to show u around i'td have to be soon.

On a side note anyone going out through lake clark pass in early may? im looking to tag along with someone if the opertunity comes around i'll be stopping in Igiugig.

Also no Airstrip at judd lake........unless you have floats, possibly could land on one of the packed ski strips the lodge makes but they arent very wide and u better have big tires and some experience

Re: Area behind Mt Susitna / Beluga Lake

Curious what your looking at out there? Have spent a ton of time over there.

Our friends (my competitors) Chugach Powder Guides, have a lodge on Judd Lake as well. No strip

Sounds like you may be looking at the property around Shell Lake? By your description it sounds as though but....Just curious.

No photos for you from me. Dont have em.

Would advise floats going that way. Lots of gravel bars on the various rivers. Better have big tires and be proficient on your short/soft landings.

Not much snow out there this year, however...we are getting around 2 feet or so now out there.

Good luck

I am looking at some land that's for sale back there on that lat/long coordinates.

If you look at google maps, that "strip" doesn't look like anything more than a swamp to me, but if anyone knows otherwise I am all ears.

Alpine T -

I am in Cordova now. Raised in Anchorage. Have spent my entire youth in the area we are talking about. Had a cabin on the Skwenta river, Grandfather built rainy Pass Lodge, etc.

Anyhow, enough about me.... I concur...I am pretty certain the area in question is swampy and buggy.

Have been looking a property out there for some time. Have a look at www.remoteproperties.com and look at the "shell lake" property. Good float access. Could also get a DC-3 in on skis in the winter into Judd if not Shell.

I fly a 170B on wheels and skis and have a lot in the Alexander Creek West subdivision just north of Mt. Susitna. There is an airstrip on the plat map but I can assure you that the area is currently bog that won't support my plane on big tires. I suspect you are looking at the same thing. I've flown the area between Mt. Su and Beluga Lake and I can't say I've ever seen a spot where I could land on wheels. Closest "strip" I am aware of is the delta on teh west end of Beluga Lake. Definately do a recon of the property before you commit any money 'cause they often look better on paper than on the ground in person. And if you want to do a recon in the next few weeks, you may need a helicopter as our ski flying is rapidly going to pot.

Well, I already intend to check out the property but maybe I will check it out a little bit more closely after this input.

That said, does anyone here have a lead or for sale any remote property generally east of the Alaska Range and south of Denali? All I need is a strip or open area at least 2200 feet long and some sort of water front (creek, river, lake, slough, etc). Even non-surveyed, never-seen, difficult to get to is okay.

That shell lake property looks interesting, but 1500' is too far from the water for me.

Re: Area behind Mt Susitna / Beluga Lake

AKT if ur looking at land out there i might have a nice spot for ya sorry 907 but u need floats for this one its a really sweet lot on a lake about 3 miles north of coal lake only 2 cabins on it and i know both people. anyway the lot isnt for sale but i know whos it is and their cabin colapsed years ago and they have pretty much written it off i bet you could pob get it for around 5 k and i've already cut an aproch to the lake. rainbows silvers and sockeyes. anyways just looking out hate to see a great lot go to waste. I have a pretty awesome cabin on a smaller lake about a mike away but i wouldnt want to be regularly going in and out with a 180. at least not till i cut some more trees down for my tcrate. 907 if u r really interested in going out there lets link up sometime next week and fly out there ur plane or mine i dont care or we can take both.

Tom Bryant?? I think that's how you spell his last name has some lots for sale and they are on a good strip.
Not sure of the # but some one should know it. Son is Steve, It is above Cotton Wood creek, On then Yetna, Has access to a Lake also.
I took my Bonanza in to the old cross strip that he put in many years ago, the new one is plenty long.

Have you considered property in the Lake Clark area (right in the middle of the Alaska Range)? It is an easy flight through Lake Clark Pass. I've got 2.5 acres at Keys Point that I bought a few years back for $25K. Beautiful lake front with access to a 2,000+ strip about a half mile away. And that Shell Lake area is sure nice if you can find something available there on the water.

Alpine T craft-

Just sent you a PM.

Have been looking for a piece of property in that area for some time. Needs to be close to mtns for heli skiing in winter. Anything west and south of the skwentna river is prime. Anything east of Judd or North is to far from the mtns. Curious about the property you speak of.
