Arizona helicopter base camp flight — DAY (5) The Gale

I’m signing a lease for a hangar in Arizona! I’m sharing with the Sheriff and MedicVac helicopters. The lessor is a Native American Indian Tribe. Very cool of them to let me stay for awhile!

Family note: My brother, who is legally adopted, is an American Indian — so I’m pretty used to the culture!

The new base camp hangar will be used to explore the vast menagerie of air parks and open land in the beautiful Southwest.

Note: Mary likes warm weather if we are investing money.

“..I’m loading up the chopper and moving to the River! The Colorado River that is…Yee Haaaa”

The following pictures were recorded in year 2018 from my old Scout. I really love the desert, it’s good to get out of the rain for awhile…

First stop on flight to Arizona Base Camp. @ Coos Bay aviation. Definitely excellent service. Mahalo!

Note: WX was IFR, 900’ broken/7miles visibility. Was cleared SVFR direct to transit parking then was politely marshaled to fuel. Great little airport.

Re: Arizona helicopter base camp flight — DAY (1)

Welcome to California, swimming pools, movie stars. The Jones’n capital of the world. It’s a 24 hour party scene in L.A. and then some. Polish your “Beamer” and cruise down the Sunset strip to the Whiskey A Go Go for a drink and a little Glam Rock! The “Sunday Morning Cowboy” is arriving…yee haa…(and he’s been away just a tad too long)!

But, on a serious note:

please beware of the dreaded wind shear, which maybe, loitering at low levels this time of year:

Re: Arizona helicopter base camp flight — DAY (2.5)

Violent weather arriving from the west has been interesting…

Gathered the following at around 06:00 PDT:

Grants Pass, Oregon (1130’ MSL) @ 05:58 PDT the wind recorded was (2/G7) KTS (basically calm in aviation standards) and then, less than (6) NM North at Sexton Summit AWOS (3833’ MSL) the wind was gusting to (52) MPH. This presents a possibility of a (45) KTS WIND SHEAR with in (2500’) elevation change.

Note: (46) more days until Winter!

Mary emailed this picture, yesterday morning, after her swim at Waikiki Beach. Been a bit envious of the weather at home!

Re: Arizona helicopter base camp flight — DAY (5) The Gale

Questions to add on the above post regarding Sexton Summit wind…

(Opinion) My big picture (below) @ 08:00PDT concerning wind and the generative low pressure: The pressure gradient is steepest now just slightly offshore of Gold Beach, Oregon. The sustained wind is about 46 KTS (estimated) in this location. This follows the intensity of the storm as the gradient moves north.

The center of the low is a tad north of Vancouver Is. @ 29.16 in.

My question to the weather gurus:

A) Is this 29.16 low considered a deep depression? Or just an average event for this time?

In other words:

B) Is this low out of season? A little stronger than most for the middle of Fall Season?

Thank you for any guidance!

It is now the season for storms in the northwest. Cliff Mass is predicting a "Very deep depression". "The most impressive storm is just offshore on Monday afternoon, and it is VERY deep, with a central pressure of 951 hPa. Deeper than the famed Columbus Day Storm. Sustained winds of 50-65 knots. You don't want to know about the gusts."

Ok folks. I get it now!

November is not a good month to fly down the coast of BC, WA, OR or NorCAL in a light VFR aircraft. Volatile low pressures really let you know.

Thank you TCJ.

You're better off in a helicopter, less felt turbulence. Don't think about the old wives tales of Robbie mast-bumping. A week ago the lowest reported pressure on the west coast was 942 hPA, or 27.82. Winds were 70 knots with gusts to 90, 40' waves. Container ship had 110 containers swept off the deck.

Doesn't even look that good in California, keep heading southeast.

Earlier this week Solander Island reported gusts to (77) knots:

Below latitude 36 is a different weather world. The contrast is amazing.
