Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Arkansas? Maybe?...

Hiiiii,

Anyone on here around Arkansas? I need to start getting in some civilian flying time. What's cool around the state to check out? I've done some camping up in the Ozarks which were great, would love to fly up through the mountains a bit to one of the smaller airports. Unfortunately I doubt I'll be able to do any off airfield landings; something tells me the insurance company won't like the fact that I'm putting a rental cessna in the dirt :D

I've met a couple of you guys on here that were from Arkansas. I haven't posted in a while and have forgotten, got busy through initial qualification. Hope all is well!

There's a grass strip just west of Fayetteville called Wedington Woods. Not sure if it's OK to land but it's a cool little housing development with a strip. Used to be friends with a couple of people there but they're gone now.

The folks at Weddington Woods are all about grass strip flying and having fun on a pretty Saturday afternoon. That being said, it is still a private strip where their homes and hangars are. If you were to ask ahead of time I'm sure it'd be okay to stop in. I'm friends with several of the guys there and if we flew in there together, we'd be welcome.

The rental plane on grass is a familiar problem, I have to be careful where I go too. If the strip has an identifier its okay to go there, preferably first with an instructor to 'sign' you off as being capable of landing there.

There are a bunch of places to go around here, it all depends on what your preferences are. East of Ft Smith on the Mulberry River is Byrd's Adventure Center. Its a neat place between the mountains with two grass strips. A 1900' for fixed wing and a 1000' for ultra lights. The river is right there for fishing & floating. Up North is Gaston's Resort, and as the name implies, there are cabins, a boat dock and a restaurant with a rustic decor. As Scolopax said.... Trout fishing ranks high on the activity at this place with guide services available. Both Gaston's and Byrd's have fly-ins on their respective calendars.

Lots of nice terrain up this way to explore by air or foot.

I do think we've written back and forth some but I cannot find the content right now.
If you want to, give me a call and we'll go from there.

Best wishes,
Kenny

Good stuff! That Gaston's looks really nice would love to fly up there. I need to get my trout permit to hit up some fly fishing. I've been dying for some Trout [-o< You know any of the FBO's around the Little Rock area by chance? One of our sim instructors flies civilian out of North Little Rock Municipal. Said they were awesome folks and super laid back and cheaper. The guys over at (K)LIT... a little stingier and expensive but better planes.

I rented 150s and 172s out of North Little Rock when I went through the 130 school house. It was a quick and painless 30 minute checkout. I don't remember any rules about not landing on grass... Or any rules in general. I flew in and out of a lot of the local grass fields but I never told them where I was going anyways. Things may have changed though, that was 10 years ago. My brother in law flys out of Central at KLIT. I went flying with him a couple months ago in one of their 172s. I wanted to go checkout Gaston's but they do have rules against grass runways. So we just flew up to Petit Jean and then Hot Springs to borrow the courtesy car and get lunch.

Sounds like North Little Rock is the same way. Who knows, they may not care. I haven't really gotten around to asking them about it.
