Aspen PFD 1000 Pro install in 182 amphib. Good idea?
Information and discussion about seaplanes, float planes, and water operations.
I'm thinking about installing an Aspen PFD 1000 Pro in my 182 amphib . My avionics shop has said they can be problematic, specifically on water takeoff which puts the aircraft attitude past the Remote Sensor Module calibration (which is completed on the ground) The result is heading errors that can be off by as much as 60 degrees.
I have also read in the Aspen install manual that the AHRS may fail to calibrate when on water due to wave action.
I flew with the Aspen in my Bonanza and really like all that it has to offer but I'm am concerned about the reliability of the units, especially in float operations.
Any pireps and/or advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

Excellent questions. I'll be monitoring this thread. Never occurred to me that float operations could be problematic for any efis.

I have the original Aspen MFD in my 185. Only about 150 hours on floats, but it always worked flawlessly. If it ever got confused by the water action, it was never for very long and as far as I can recall, only on start up and initial taxi.

Have had Aspen in our Maule for approx 4 years...
On 31" bushwheels, so "resting" attitude is about 10 degrees nose up.
Have never had a problem with startup and accurate attitude and heading information...even when initialization was in 10-15 degrees of bank or up to 15 degrees nose up (depending on parking location when using unimproved landing areas).
Even initialized once when taxiing over fairly rough terrain...no problems in these areas.
I see the note about possible difficulties with wave action, but I can't assist you there...only used Aspen on wheels...
PS Had difficulty with initial install and accurately aligning Aspen...turns out it was due to installer error/misunderstanding on how to complete this step... A few phone calls to Aspen rep corrected this quickly.

Thank you for both responses. I have decided to go with the G500.
