Atlanta Idaho Pics and Vid

On 07/21/2010, we visited Atlanta in search of breakfast. Atlanta has kind of a fun approach, circling the bowl to the east to set up for the right hand turn to final. After the hike into town, we were disappointed to find out that there is no longer ANYTHING open in Atlanta. According to the locals, there hasn't been for many years. We elected to pass on the warm springs and beat feet back to the plane so we could get out of there before it got hot. Before we left, we did check out the town, including the cool old jail with the old pics of the area. Very cool.

Here are some pics and video of the short visit.

Was that some sort of rough landing warning device I heard in the background? 8)

Hey, hey now!!! That would be my excited 3 year old. He usually starts squealing on final descent or near touchdown and ends at the later end of the rollout. Sometimes we get his version of "We did it!" with hands up in the air.

Nice pics! The runway looks like its in great shape.

If anyone else finds themselves in that area and wants something more catered towards tourists, it's very close to Idaho City which has an excellent airstrip, some restaurants, numerous old buildings from the 1800s, a museum, etc.

More accurately, I should have said that it was the sound of a 3-year-old's fun meter being pegged! (Mine too, I just refrain from the squealing...sometimes :D )

We thought about Idaho City, but since we hadn't been there before and wanted to be sure to be some place with something to do for the afternoon, we opted for Warm Springs since we had been there before. Idaho City is definitely on the hit list for a future trip.

Let's just hope this is as close as he gets to proving that he would be just that in jail!

How was the hot spring at Warm Springs? We went there last year and it was in good shape.

Re: Atlanta Idaho Pics and Vid

When I was checkin' out (researching) Atlanta a few years ago, I was told that the flat strip approximately paralell with the river was a private strip, and people had been 'told' to get their plane off-and go to the uphill strip perpendicular to the river, that that was the forest service strip, and therefore the public strip. We flew in, using what we had been told was the proper strip, and spent the weekend-had a GREAT time camping, soaking, etc. but like I say-several years ago.....(at that time the private strip land and ranch was for sale-big bucks)
Anyhow, IF memory serves me, the strip in these PX does not look like the uphill strip I used. Has that status changed? I am sure someone can give us an 'update'........

Re: Atlanta Idaho Pics and Vid

the big strip was private years ago and the first fly Idaho book advised not to land there... I think that it now belongs to plane friendly folks and you can land there. I don't have my second edition book of fly Idaho here at home, it's in the hangar but I think it's now listed..When I landed there a few years ago the whistle stop was open and quite busy. We got a tour around town in a local pick up truck who saw us land at the forest service strip and came and picked us up. Showed us a hot water fall which served folks as a warm shower... The pic is of the forest strip which seems in WAAAY better shape than when I landed there with big rocks at the upper end...

Thanks, Iceman, appreciate the 'heads up'. I'm traveling (TX) and have a slow connect. and the vid is not an option till I get a faster line. The still shots don't give me the 'slope' perception that you get standing there, and yes, I do remember the bigger rocks at the high end. I hadn't had my 182 long, and I am sure they seemed bigger to me than they really were...... :)
Thanks again.

ps Traveling, I am on my wife's laptop and the spell check is gone since she doesn't have Firefox.........
No dictionary available, either, but how much good are they when you have to know how to spell a word
to find it????

The perpendicular strip is Green Valley. Not sure how friendly they are. I do know that it is owned by the Coors family and I have talked to a few that tried to go there but were told that they were booked full.

The runway is Atlanta, the north/south strip with a good upslope. It is in great shape. Since this was my first time there, I can't compare to past conditions.

BM, the hot springs at Warm Springs were great. We had been told that there was a rock slide that wiped out some of the pools, but I didn't see any major differences from the times I've been there before. There are still several pools and the tub in the shack. It was a great spot to hang out for the day. The only down side is that there wasn't much shade and it was really hot. Luckily there was one tree with some shade under it to stay out of the sun. Here are a few pics of the springs. Sorry I don't have a better shot from above the springs.

Dee checks out the cooler of the pools next to the river.
