We are working on putting together a flyin that is focused on activities for "kids"(all ages welcome, newborn to 90+). We have selected Ryan Airfield in West Glacier and have tentatively set the weekend for Aug. 18th and 19th. It will be fairly simple since it will be our first year. Overall we are working on having a set of activities to select from for the 18th followed by a group dinner. Activities we are looking at are: whitewater rafting, horseback riding, hiking in Glacier National Park, and activities at the airfield itself, etc. The activities will be on the 18th only along with the group dinner but feel free to fly-in earlier and stay longer if you like. Just remember to fly into Ryan field you need to receive the safety briefing from the RAF, http://www.theraf.org.
We commonly take our own kids to work sessions and camp-outs to our favorite locations to share the experience. We figured this would be a good excuse to put the word out to share these good times with fellow aviators and their family/friends and use it as an opportunity to expose more kids to back-country flying. The location will be ideal for people to fly into and even drive if desired. It has great amenities like a cooking shelter and bathroom but with the rustic nature of hanging out in Glacier country.
The flying in the area is beautiful with large peaks, beautiful lakes, and great scenery. You can fly out in the morning and do a great loop through the southern half of Glacier, Great Bear Wilderness, Bob Marshall Wilderness and hit Schafer Meadow, Meadow Creek, and Spotted Bear airstrips.
If you have interest or questions please feel free to contact me via PM. I will continue to post here as we work towards firming up this inaugural event.
