wouldn't you know it, now that i remodeled i find i have a blank wall 8ftx8ft that needs decorating and what i'd like is a vfr wall chart with all the stuff we like to see when pre-flighting. a USA wall chart would be great but more important would be the western U.S. with lotsa detail. i really don't relish the thought of tearing up a bunch of used sectionals or pieceing together WAC's. any ideas? john

The coolest ones I have seen have been sectionals pieced together as wall paper. I have a blank wall and an envelope full of sectionals waiting to be glued up, just not exactly sure how to do it......

Several years ago I made up a map similar to what you describe. I used 1/2" dense blue styrofoam insulation board. Trimmed charts to match up better. Hard to match the earth's curvature on a flat panel. I got some of the charts at the FBO where I worked after they had expired. Some I got from visiting pilots from other areas and the rest I bought honestly. Charts were cheaper then.

I had it fastened to my basement block wall with Tap-in fasteners. The styrofoam was nice for using push pins at the airports I had visited. The entire panel was easily moved when I wanted it at a different location. Had my home base marked with the mandatory string and mileage chart.

I did the same thing as 25echo except used WAC charts instead of sectionals, was able to cover the western u.s. pretty good. I used corkboard as backing. Matching the chart edges difficult, but the end product was pretty neat and worked well for flight planning and daydreaming. It was also a good conversation piece with pilots and non-pilots alike.

I just found the envelope full of charts I bought for my wall and they are WAC charts too. I laid them out and have 13 feet X 9.5 feet of map if I get it all glued up. I am searching for the right adhesive now and look forward to getting them up soon.

Any advice on adhesive? Spray on would be nice that didn't lock on contact so I could fine tune the position as I stick em on....?

Mine wall chart is out of WAC charts. Goes from the west coast of CA to San Antonio, and from that line , north to Canada. Takes up 7' X 8',covers a little more that the area that I fly, and has the most desireable detail for me, of any maps I have seen sofar. I have added some of my ownnotes to it.
I buy adhesive foil stars to mark points of interest, number them, and have an index for flight planning.

I also sectioned Galens map of Utah, had them enlarged a little and laminated. Makes great place mats/conversation pieces, but probly only works if you are single, or your lady is as interested in this stuff as you are

i think the WAC is the best solution to my blank wall and thanks for all the imput.

Pam and I put up some old sectionals in the hangar today, not the best but the price is right.
She is trying very hard to enjoy flying.......and will be my head navigator some day.

I just received my IDAHO Aeronautical chart from the Idaho Dept. of Transportation when I paid for next year's registration.

It is a large chart of Idaho with all airports on it. It has all the backcountry and most of the private airports on it. If you are interested, I have the e-mail address of the person that is in charge. It is way cool.

I think California, for you, also has a large chart.

I vote for putting in a hi-def ceiling mount projector that you hook up to your computer. Point it at the nice blank spot on the wall and then go to one of the flight planning web sites and project whatever you want on the wall. Up to date all the time and relevant to your current flight. Slightly more $ than old sectionals but when not flight planning you can huddle around your fuel sucking heater with your wife/friends and watch flying movies. The state was running an ebay store for all their used stuff and those projectors would show up frequently. The problem was finding one that had a low time bulb and a remote. Those usually sold for around $250. The store is now gone, guess they sold everything the state owned.

I used white peg board and wall paper paste to mount wac's for the entire US and northen Mexico on one of the hanger walls. I first laid out the charts on the hanger floor and cut them, and taped them together as I wanted them to look on the wall. It's amazing how big an area you need to mount them all. I installed the string with the weight on the end and marked mileage on chart. You need two of each to cut up. A fair amount of work and $ but worth it. Get's a lot of attention from people.

My previous landlord probably hated me after I moved out. I just used tacks to pin up sectionals on the drywall Took me a short bit to figure out I had to trim the sectionals with scissors to line them up correctly (Yeah, I'm a little slow).

But your right! Does take up a large area on the wall. Especially when I tacked up the entire Northwest (Seattle, Great Falls, Upper Klamath Falls and upper Salt Lake).

I'm probably just like most others. I can look and study them wall charts for hours!!
