Re: Avid Magnum vs. Highlander vs. Supercub

Rob
I just took the bait and ran with it, Blame Zane, he was the first one to mention a Maule, Just thought I would spray a little starting fluid past the lighter to see what would happen!!!!.
As always I think the set of wings that you are setting between are the very best one to use at the moment,Or even hanging underneath, BAR NONE. I would love to go try them all out and see what turned my crank! I have never been in any airplane that I made it back to the ground with that I did not enjoy!!
Rob, just so you know, I sold my M6 so I could get a Glastar. Why (because I damn well wanted to) No way to justify it or anything else, Just damn selfishness!
I would not have a Super Cub as a go anywhere plane as I'm to damn big to fit in it and be comfortable, Now this Summer I tried on a extended widened body wide body super supercub and man what a machine with a Lycon io390 with nitrous in it that puts out 210hp with out the nitrous. What a Machine.
He only has a little over 140K into it?? For me? NO! For him Damn He's a happy Camper.
My self, I'm pretty happy right now with the 195, who know's what tomorrow will bring. Hopefully better weather as I'm Stuck in Tok and just watching it rain and supposed to change to snow before I can get out of here.
I just remebered that chicken guy lives close to here, anybody have his Phone # that can PM me and I'll see if he is close enough to bs with.
Rob Have fun with your Cub and Your Harley, That's what Life is all about.
And your right, this got off the track but Sh2t happens.
Enjoy your posts and your attitude, we all have them, just like those other parts??
What would life be with out them??

Re: Avid Magnum vs. Highlander vs. Supercub

On my last trip to Moab I saw three amazing planes taxi out to the run-up area and take off in 100ft. (seriously). They looked like Breezy's with two engines up top, a small aerodynamic pod out front, two seats tandem, big tires, and a ton of crap in packs bungee'd on. These things almost needed no take-off roll and they were up........straight up! I thought to myself, " I have finally seen the ultimate southern Utah explorer. No runway, no problem. Rough runway, no problem.

Anyone know what these were??? Maybe they're just twin engine Breezy's?? Wish I had shown up a bit earlier and had a chance to talk with them.

Re: Avid Magnum vs. Highlander vs. Supercub

The AirCam is a derivative of an aircraft that was developed by Phil Lockwood as a photography platform for some sort of National Geographic project. There's a great article on it in one of the AOPA Pilot magazines from a few months ago (I think..all the magazines blur together.)

The AirCam's little brother, the Drifter, was actually developed long before the AirCam, but is a similar design with a single engine and lower price tag. We rebuilt a 1986 model a few months back from a pile of parts. It's the same model aircraft that my friend Arty flew from Portland to Lakeland earlier this year. The old models use a 503 or 582, the newer ones that Lockwood sells use a 912. It's a different sort of flying, you have to be in the mood for open cockpit.

I forgot about one, and I think it is the one, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

A Rans s7. long tail. Rotax 912, 100hp. So, if anyone knows of one for sale, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks Gary

That looks like it. I dont remember the long canoe so much but that must have been it. Like Zane said, you must have to be in the mood for an open cockpit experience.

I called John. He wants $67K. Seems like a nice guy. 80 years young. This is the 4th one he has built. Just builds them and sells them. Says it is well equiped. Supposed to send me some pictures, I will try and post them when I get them, incase anyone else is interested. Probably a good deal, but too riuch for me, but thanks for the heads up.

A guy o my airpoirt owns an Aircam, he has a lot of supercub time and in fact owns a very nice supercub but seem to prefer flying the Aircam. It does look like a flying canoe but operates in quite a STOL-y fashion. Looks like fun, at least until the cold weather hits. They seem to ask a helluva lotta money for them.

Tadpole, glad you recognized the humor factor, most of the time I ramble away someone ends up all wound up

M6RV6, you are having way to much fun, in way too many fun airplanes, and yes that is what life's all about  hope to cross paths with you someday.

Gary, I had actually thought of mentioning the Rans. A good cubber friend of mine helped build one for a friend. He is a cubber, an A&P, A true bush pilot (retired MAF), and he was impressed with it.That said a lot to me. Although I will add that when it came time to replace his cub, he elected to build up a 180hp Smith Cub and license it ELSA. The best of all worlds for him, owner maintenance on the plane, owner maintenance on the body, and not a lot of feds to answer to... I hope to be as lucky, if I ever get to retire

BTW, I really, really want an RV-6 to compliment my cub. I can't afford one and could probably get by with a -4. In fact I think I am starting to lean towards the -4. Anyone know of any great deals on a RV-4?

Take care, Rob

Re: Avid Magnum vs. Highlander vs. Supercub

Rob

That is good info, thanks. I had forgotten about the Rans too, until I decided that I wanted tandem seating, just because I wanted more room if I were to bring someone along.

And, if and when I were ever get to where I could have a 3rd plane, it will probably be an RV-4. Relatively inexpensive fun. I have flown them, and really liked them. I have seen what appeared to be some pretty good deals on them in Barnstormers. They made a lot more of them, than they have of the Rans, so it should be much easier to find a "Deal".

Actually planning on being down by Yuma this fall. I have a buddy fron SEZ that goes to the dunes quite often, and has been asking me to go. I think I will be able to do it this year. Where are you based down there, or do ya have your own strip?
