When your mother or father dies in some tragic event you don't show pictures of their mangled corpses. Instead you show pictures of happier times to remember them by.

In that spirit I offer this web page.

Liberty Belle Flicker page.

Man - that SUCKS, but I'm glad everybody's OK.

This rehashes an old discussion, but I'd say that if the aircraft made a successful emergency landing as a result of a mechanical defect (in this case, fire?) it didn't crash- it landed!

Only 7 aboard...

Here is the story from a B-17 pilot friend of mine who spoke with the crew just a bit ago.

Me: …looks like the pilot / crew did a great job setting her in the field and evacuating those on board. Must have been pretty bad to have made the call not to try for the airfield....one of the up close photos from another site shows the #2 engine feathered. I assume that is the one that was on fire which would be close to the fuselage and may have played into the decision. Jeff, you are B-17 pilot qualified, any thoughts or news?

Jeff: Just got off the phone...

Yes... #2 Engine Fire... Couldn't get it out... Made the right decision to put it down in a corn field. Landed gear down. Must've done an awesome job! One slightly injured getting out... On a repositioning flight to Indy...so not a ride deal, just crewmembers.

Couldn't get fire trucks out to airplane because of mud...burned to the ground... So sad!

She was loaded with fuel and oil for the reposition flight so a fire less than 20 minutes into the flight was about the worst time possible.

An old childhood friend of mine is one of the other (newly type rated) command pilots on the Liberty Belle. Well, he WAS one of the other command pilots :(

He said to me that he flew left seat on that airplane two weeks ago and it ran beautifully. Nothing that he knew of that was starting to give any warnings.

Here's a link to more pictures. Show the beginning of the fire to the end. Again, very sad!

Also, I mean absolutely no disrespect in posting pictures of a burning classic and piece of history. If I knew people were inside the burning wreckage, then I would not post.

EZFlap, be notified I am stealing that picture! Great post. I will use it on other forums in support of our domestic powerhouse Boeing when the conversation steers towards how great Airbus is.

Anyway, to recap...great post, I'm stealing your pic. Thanks in advance.

I know where we can get some parts.

I think I remember seeing this thing while driving by a while back and wondering if it was real.
