I am speaking from memory here,
But I don't think that they told the whole story. My recollection from the time of the incident is that they were using a barrel of fuel to feed the APU, as there was a problem with the normal APU fuel system. It was the "barrel" of fuel that came loose, spilled and ignited resulting in the loss of the aircraft.
Too lazy to do any research but that is how I recall it. If so....seems to have been entirely preventable.
Now the Confederate(yeah I know)Air Force has the only flying B-29 in the world.

Holy crap that was heartbreaking! I watched the whole thing and totally thought they were gonna fly it out of there.

Wow that sucks. after all that work and they were so close. Too bad it was something stupid that put an end to that plane.
