Back Country Tent

Looking for a new tent. Lightweight, tall, 75-100sq ft or so. Anybody have any favorites?

Re: Back Country Tent

12 Years ago my son wanted to stick his first caribou. We were going to be out for a while so we wanted room, but needed to come in at a reasonable weight. I bought a Mountain Hardware Skyview 3. It's a tad smaller, maybe 65 -70 square feet, and about 25' worth of vestibule. Weighs in a bit over 8lbs, bagged, with the floor footprint, a loft, and a few extra spikes and cord.

That tent has been from mexico to alaska, in summer heat and -20* montana nights on elk hunts. It has been in wind, rain and snow, that airplanes had no business being in... It has been out many times every year since, and still looks like new.

I understand Mountain Hardware no longer makes this model, and I am really bummed, because there is no doubt in my mind that would be my next tent... again. I have no idea how long this tent will keep on looking new and going strong, but I rue the day I have to replace it.

Find the comparable Mountain Hardware, and you will likely be done tent shopping for a long time to come.

Take care, Rob

Only 1600 dollars

Last tent you will ever buy. Because you won't have any money left.

Re: Back Country Tent

I got my new Mountain Hardware tent yesterday, that I ordered special for my month long Alaska trip, that I leave tomorrow for.

Last night I open it in the house for a trial "set-up". No pictures or instructions. 10 minuets later, I am still baffled. My wife comes to look. She says there is no floor. Turns out, I got poles, stakes, and the rain fly, but no tent! (did I say, I leave tomorrow?) I am PO'd. Now I take a cheap-o tent I guess.

Hi Skymaule, my personal favorite is from Sierra Designes and is called the Wu Hu.

https://www.sierradesigns.com/p-139-wu-hu-annex-42.aspx

They make several versions of the Wu Hu: 4; 4+2; 6; and 6+2.

You can find them with a discount on several sites. Great tent! My first Sierra Designs tent lasted 14 years and lots of camping. Easily held up under high winds, never leaked, snow never bothered it, and I liked the quiet blue/white color. The fly is full cover to the ground and never required waterproofing. Strong recommendation from me.

I love love love my 8 man Kifaru tipi. Huge. Lightweight for the size. Toasty warm and comfy with the stove. Can stand up in it. Uses the floor so can wear boots in it, dress in it, etc. Easy to drag packs in, etc. Love it.

Re: Back Country Tent

I"m done with small 8x10 tents. My next one will be 10 x 15 or 18... Not that much more weight and a whole lot better for long stays at Johnson creek.. I'll keep my 8x10 for day trips out of JC should I get weathered in somewhere...

REI makes awesome "family dome" tents that are large, roomy and with nice features like room dividers.

For a small tents, I've had REI, North Face, Sierra Designs and Kelty. My current one is a Big Agnes. VERY light and very nice. I would recommend it, and I it even got some awards. But you have to treat it nice, as it is made from very light material. I think shortfield.com sells them?

Re: Back Country Tent

eureka makes some nice ones... go on Ebay and check tents under camping ... Their Tetragon 1610 and 1210 seem to be a good buy..the copper canyon tents are a little more expensive but most have straight walls which gives you more room...type in eureka or you'll get every tent made...

So Hottshot, how does that sauna work out for you in "the BIG one"?

I see a stove pipe for heating it up. Wood, pellet or coal fired?

Re: Back Country Tent

Hey Skymaule,
If you buy a tent from Cabelas don't count on them standing behind their imported products if it gets damaged.

Re: Back Country Tent

My buddy has one of those at his house (a bigger version) and it KICKS ASS. The best part is no chemicals. He just drains and refills once a week. The submersed stove heats up the water in about 1.5 hrs if you keep it ripping.

Anyway, didn't mean to derail the topic, back to tents... When car camping I bring along a HUGE Coleman condo, but it's just too heavy for flying purposes. I do love being able to stand upright (6' 1") in that tent and have room to pile clothes and gear without stepping over it.

This looks like a nice option: http://www.bigagnes.com/Products/Detail/Tent/BigHouse6

Chris at Shortfield/SkyMountainGear.com can prob get you a nice deal on these.
