I'd make a WAG wild assed guess, that with a 180 - 200 HP mill they'll achieve 110-115 MPH @ 75%, maybe more with a cruise prop? With 200 square feet of wing area I imagine the glide ratio will be pretty cool, and gusty landings will take some concentration. Oh yeah..and if it rains at Johnson Creek, cue up the Rolling Stones' " Give Me Shelter" and stay dry under the wings; the Boss rules. :D

Anyone venture to guess air speeds ?

Actually, looking at all the specs and photos of the Boss, I'd be very surprised if it makes 100mph on cruise, even with a constant speed prop. I'm betting it's more in the 85mph range. And with all that drag, I'm guessing the glide ratio isn't too impressive either, but the sink rate is probably pretty low.

Yeah, you could be right. If it is in the 80 mph range for 75% cruise, low and slow is fine, but low and lethargic might not be.

That sort of a performance spec might really limit its appeal from reaching a broader market. I'd hate to see that happen. The folks at Backcountry Super Cubs are all really nice people and I wish them all the best success with their new designs.

I don't know enough about airfoils such as the Riblett vs certain other NACA designs. I have a great admiration for some of the older 4 place Stinson 108 planes. The Piper 20/22 and Cub wing designs are similar but vary in length and wing area, and you can see the differences in speed performance. Gosh, I hope the new 4 place "BOSS" can at least break 100 mph normal cruise because that is sort of a mental performance spec. for many potential buyers.

This is all so confusing... I think I'll open another bottle of Scotch... my third for the day..

This Backcountry Boss SQ4 STOL is just so amazing. I have narrowed my choice of a 4 place EAB down to two models, and the SQ4 is just in a league of its own. I have received several texts from Bruce Reed and spoken with Wayne Axelson; the staff at Back Country Super Cubs seem ever so friendly and helpful.

Although I am not quite ready to pull the trigger on this kit, I am extremely interested, and would welcome comments and emails. Wayne said that with luck they will have an SQ4 at Oshkosh 2014.

Denali,

Have you made your decision yet on if the Backcountry BOSS is the one? I think this airplane looks like a hoot.

Darin, how are the Backcountry cub guys doing in sales of the BOSS? Have you flown one yet? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts...

Re: Backcountry BOSS / SQ-4

Heyas Crzyivan13,

I have been overwhelmed with issues which have placed this all on hold. I still very much l admire the SQ4, but I am concerned that there seem to be few, if any, about, and the builder community not very vocal.

I have been therefore gravitating towards the 4 place Bearhawk. In all likelihood I will end up having to buy one that is all built and ready to rumble. I went to the recent Frederick, Maryland AOPA Fly-In and got some rates from the insurance folks there...not that bad.

Just as some folks say the best gun is the one you have with you, likewise, perhaps the best plane is the one you actually are flying and can put into the air, rather than dream about building and flying in about 1000+ hours.

A lady friend once said.. " .Life is short, buy the shoes." Maybe for some pilots the message is " Life is short, buy the Bearhawk." .

Many folks like myself go back and forth on what to buy. In situations like this, it is probably wise to think and be like a Marine .....Semper Gumby ...Always Flexible....

There is going to be one getting covered in the next couple months at a buddies hangar about 30 miles away. I saw the plane itself at the BackCountry plant a few weeks ago, and it is due to be trucked to my area for the covering and paint work, I'll post some pictures when it arrives.

Tom, I will expect weekly updates on this project..... (Plus more reasons for you to go flying)

Just kidding, but it would be great to see a few pics of one going together. This could be a future build for me (one day). Like I really need another project.

I love the idea of the sq4. But like Denali said, there is so few out there, it's hard to say if it would be a good choice. I would like to have a plane that can haul two people and enough gear for more than a weekend and still have some awesome stol performance.

Time will tell what I ACTUALLY need. I love the savage for the type of flying I'm going now. It's fun to think about future missions, however. I really want to start hunting out west. I would love to take three weeks off for a hunt and fly to my hunting area with all needed gear in the baggage. Of course, Alaska hunting is extremely high on the to do list. 84 gallons of fuel would be handy for such jaunts.

And it has four seats. Wayne is obviously a hell of a stick and he knows those airplanes and maybe more importantly how to fly that slat and wing combo.

I don't think any jackass could just hop in one and start pulling off landings that look like that. But I would love to give it a whirl!

This jackass is working on it, but a long way to go.

That is for sure, although I found hairline cracks in one of the prop blades so had to pull and ship it back for a new blade. That was back in October, but I'll have it tomorrow. Woohoo!
