Backcountry Bound: TX-UT-ID

Planning a trip to Idaho in the SQ-2 right after Labor Day.

Day 1 - will hopefully see me reach Lake Powell. Cal Black Memorial (U96) to be exact. I'll overnight at Halls Crossing.

Day 2 - I'll hopefully have great morning air and hit Piute Canyon, Browns Rim, Poison Spring, and Dirty Devil on the way to Salmon where I'll overnight.

The following several days I plan on visiting the more "interesting" strips in the mornings, and fly-fishing the afternoons.

Haven't decided where I'll base out of, or if I'll base. I'm actually bringing camping gear this time.

Once headed back home I plan on stopping in Taos, NM and fly-fishing for a day before heading to the house.

I'm open to any thoughts or suggestions, or if anyone plans to be in these areas the same time let me know.

Sounds like a great trip. Your route northward will take you very close to Mexican Mountain, that's one of my favorites out there and a must see. Don't forget the short walk to see the ancient petroglyphs. And since you're there you might as well hit Cedar Mountain just to the north. At over 7k feet there's great views from the cliff at the south end. Then stop in Huntington for fuel. There's a great pilot lounge with shower and a courtesy car to run into town. Before all that sounds like you'll be flying up the Dirty Devel river to hit Poison Springs, might as well hit Happy Canyon before the Dirty Devil strip. Then there's Angel Point just after that.... I can go on and on. Of course once you get to Idaho you probably already know that Johnson Creek can't be beat for a base camp. Showers, wifi, free firewood, van to Yellow Pine etc. However, camping out at one of the other more remote airstrips is a great time too. With a plane like the SQ-2 I think a camp out at Mile Hi would be a good time. Have fun and take a lot of pictures for the rest of us!

Check the status of fires in that part of the world. It's possible to get somewhere in great visibility, then have the wind shift, and you are now in residence there till it rains.

Don't ask how I learned that.

JC is real nice, too nice if you're looking for any kind of wilderness experience, at least in my book. Last time I was at Chamberlain Basin, there was NOBODY there, all day and all night, it was REAL quiet. While several thousand feet long, with clear approaches, it is no way any kind of challenge, but at least when I was there not over run with rafters, outfitters, and other pilots.

Tragically, ATXCitab (Hank Sasser) perished in a crash in August 2014. He was a great guy and will be missed. -Z

Thanks guys.

I bought the Fly Utah books and waypointed all the interesting strips into Foreflight. I could spend a day checking them all out - there are so many on my route. Any fly-fishing for trout in this area? (I wouldn't think so because of the heat)
