Backcountry Cherokee

Here's a video from a flight out to the old Lovell Cove airstrip on the shore of Takla Lake in Northern British Columbia the other day. The strip has seen better days, but my old Cherokee did ok!

Re: Backcountry Cherokee

Did you buy that plane from a John Hubbard? I know he sold his plane recently for medical reasons. And I don't know many yellow Cherokee's.
Also nice video! That looks like it would be a cool place to camp!

Keep it up!

Same airplane. I bought it in May. It gets recognized all the time. People seem surprised when they see me rather than John step out.

There is actually an excellent campsite within walking distance of the strip near the lake. It was developed for visiting families back when the logging camp was active.

Cool video, I too bought a Cherokee in May...you and Piperpainter give me hope for low wing back country ops.

I too would like to know how you mounted camera, and i would love to see more pictures of the plane.

I mount my camera on the right tiedown ring using a Ram yoke mount (I have to wrap a strip of rag around it a few times to give it enough bulk so the mount can grip) connected to a 3" Ram arm connected to a Ram B ball Gopro mount connected to a Gopro-Virb adapter connected to the Garmin Virb mount (with the exception of the Virb bits it's stuff I had laying around from using my tablet in the cockpit) and zip tied for security. It's secure but I'm not very happy with it. With all the connections, the sheer size of the mount, and the length of the arm it produces too much vibration in the air and especially on the ground. The most stable solution would be to use one of the adhesive mounts that came with my Virb, but I'm leery of sticking anything to my airplane and I don't trust adhesives (especially given that in an average year we will see temperatures from -40 to over +30C). I've ordered one of these mounts: http://www.amazon.com/UltraClamp-Assembly-Cameras-Scopes-Binoculars/dp/B00CDIGDGC I hope that I can get a little more stability out of it by virtue of its smaller size and having far fewer connections to tighten down.

No one would ever mistake a low wing tricycle airplane for a serious bush machine. However, it really isn't that much of a disadvantage as long as the bushes are trimmed low enough within your wingspan :D .

Ask and you shall receive :) :

Re: Backcountry Cherokee

Very cool. I had a Cherokee 180 for 9 years and it served me well.

Re: Backcountry Cherokee

BCpilot, i have used the adhesive mount on two planes now and never have a problem. One on the vertical stab of my C150 and one on the vertical stab of my Citabria. The fabric on the Citabria made the video too shaky, so i found another spot to mount it. Never had a problem with the mount moving though, and I'm in northern AB where we get extreme temperature changes as well.
Nice plane and welcome to the forum.

Re: Backcountry Cherokee

Awesome! I knew there weren't many that are yellow! I agree the biggest disadvantage I have as a low wing is that I dont have the wintip clearance that I wish I had. Oh well!
