Backcountry Helicopter Logging
It takes strength and fortitude to beat the air into submission.
I've seen a couple timber sales here in the Olympic Natl Forest that were specified to be helicopter logged,
"for environmental reasons" -- mainly to avoid building new roads.
At least one sale was very close to an existing road system--
so close in fact that I could sit in my rig and watch the operations.
Seeing as it is so much more expensive to get logs out with a helicopter,
instead of using a skidder or tower to get the logs to a landing
and then just use a loader to get them onto a truck & haul them out,
IMHO the state really sacrificed a lot of revenue just for the sake of being politically correct.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!
Anybody have experience to share on the Kaman K-Max? I understand it is used in heli-logging among other things. There was one on static display at last year's Alaska Airmen's show, and it was my first encounter with one. Besides being overall mind-bending, its sheer height was quite impressive in person- as well as the notable absence of a tail rotor. It seems like the pilot's view would rival a tandem-seater fixed wing aircraft.

Saw a couple of Kamax'sworking fires in Oz a few years ago, those blades look like they are going to fly to bits.
They still have wooden blades and servo tabs flexing the blades for control? Fly SEAT's on fires in the Australian summer, working with Cranes, Blackhawks, 212's, 214's and Hueys both 204's and 205's. The single engine Hueys are those most charismatic machines, could watch them for hours.
