Backcountry seminar in Nampa

Hey all,
Our flying club, T-Craft Aero Club, in Nampa is having Lori MacNichol in on Thursday evening, at the EAA/Cap hanger. Non-members to the club are welcome to attend.

Thursday April 23rd – 7:00 PM EAA/CAP “Flying Idaho’s Backcountry
Presenter: Lori MacNichol - $10.00 cover charge cash or check.

Brief Description:
Idaho and Utah offers a wealth of Backcountry airstrips that are nestled in the deep canyons of the wilderness. However, backcountry flying demands precision, an understanding of aircraft performance, and knowledge of mountain and canyon meteorology.
This seminar focuses on the finer points of spot landings! The goal is to give the pilot tools to capture the aim point and master airspeed control whether it be on pavement or in the dirt.

This seminar qualifies for credit in the FAA Wings Proficiency Program. You can register at the following link or there will be a list at the meeting.

If you have not registered with the FAA Wings program, it is very easy to do. Go to the following link: http://www.faasafety.gov/, click on Get Registered with FAASafety.gov.

The could be a good thing for me to attend...spot landings are something I struggle with. I'll plan on being there if I can get my homework done :?

Re: Backcountry seminar in Nampa

Had a good time last night. Meet up with Student BCP at the seminar. It was mostly an intro to "locking in" your speed and aiming point. I thought it was pretty good and gave me a few things to think about and practice. I have never been very good at picking an aiming point...I always just picked where I wanted to touchdown and did what I had to do to make it happen. I'm going to try applying some of the things she said and see how it works.

She also did an intro to canyon turns and how to perform the basic canyon turn. We have talked about that here and I have practiced it many times. The IMPORTANT part that got left out in the description I read was don't load the wing . Makes perfect sense....but now I have to go practice some more.

Dam, I didn't see this until the 24th, and I would have attended this. Is there a chance that they might have another one?

What he meant to type was: "Do not load the WING" [-X

Usually relax on the yoke or stick a bit to keep from "loading the wing"

I'm not in SLC this weekend. Good thing, too. It's supossed to rain all weekend and it's an open stadium. I drive one of the RR semi's and I'm home here in ID this weekend.

Sorry bout that...should have payed more attention to what I typed.

like wannabe said, you don't pull back on the stick. Because you are not pulling back on the stick the nose will drop some...but you should have been trimmed for whatever speed you were flying the canyon at so the nose will not drop too much and you should only lose 50 to 100 feet.

Sorry, I probably should have posted this sooner, but I wasn't sure if the club would let non-members come. As it turned out it was no problem. Don't know when they are having another one, but I'll definitely let you all know if there is one :D

Re: Backcountry seminar in Nampa

We're having another one next Thursday. Don't think Lori is gonna be there though. Anyone is welcome to come. Here is the email from our membership director.

This coming Thursday, April 22nd will be our annual backcountry seminar at 7 PM in the EAA/CAP facility, NOT our hanger.

There will be something for all members
- New pilots/members. A brief tour of popular BC strips in Idaho
- BC Wannabe's. What it takes to start training in the BC; a brief review of T-Craft Policy, training tools and resources.
- Existing BC Pilots. Review of the techniques, practices, weather, and special considerations for flying in the BC.
- Round-table discussions of best practices and lessons learned by some of our BC Pilots.

Guests and/or potential members are welcome, we should have plenty of room.

So did anybody here make it over to the seminar Thursday night? I already had a trip planned and couldn't make it but I heard it was real good and they had like 11 guests. Was wondering if any of the guests was you guys.
