Bad buzz job skills

Nye County officials said the pilot, 70-year-old Earl Griffin, was “buzzing” the driver when the plane flew too low and the landing gear struck the truck’s hood. It then crushed the roof of the vehicle.

Griffin made an emergency landing on a street.

The driver, 67-year-old David Smith, is recovering, although the extent of his injuries is unknown.

Police described the two men as friends but did not explain why Griffin flew so close to the truck. He has not been charged.

Crystal is a small, unincorporated town in Nye County, about 80 miles from Las Vegas.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.

Dick Tremaine, the A & P from Dyer, was disassembling the aircraft yesterday. He said that the pilot noticed his "friend" driving along on the empty road and decided to make a pass. Being "friends" he thought he should make it a "low" pass. I was told that the tire made contact with a windshield and the aircraft was currently missing one of it's main gear. Dick said that the Nye County deputy was not amused when the pilot stated that it must have been a good landing, he walked away. The aircraft, a piper, was uninsured. I sure hope that they were good friends.

Lucky nobody got killed.
Thirty plus years ago this one guy's step dad I knew cut the engine on his PA-18 and glided in above and behind his neighbor's pickup as it was going down the county gravel. He touched a main wheel on the roof of the pickup cab and continued on his way. The top of the cab even popped back up afterward with no dent. I understand it was in retribution for the neighbor cutting his pickup engine and coasting up behind him and blowing the horn while he was relieving himself at the side of the same road. When everything works its just a good story between friends. When it doesn't? It's a bad one between you and the powers that be.

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

Huh...

Sounds like a guy I used to know :^o Who buzzed a bunch of his buddies, who were drinking his beer in his hangar one dark summer's night.

Came over the airport in the C180 about 2,000 AGL, lights all out, cut the engine back to idle and coasted in, and banged the mains off the hangar roof on the way over their heads. Fist full of throttle to go around and make sure the drunks were all awake, and then came in to see if any beer was left.

Just a story I heard from a friend of a friend.

I heard about that once from a friend of that friend. Or was it arround the camfire from a guy that just walked up that had to much to drink.

Sounds like cases of the "hey watch this" syndrome. That kinda shit gets people hurt. Everybody sez "wow, that's really cool" until the guy screws up, then it changes to "wow, what an asshole". I get called that enough without trying for it.

Gump, a friend of mine did that with a Super Cub in your old stomping grounds - unfortunately the Feds were inside the building "visiting". Bummer... #-o

A guy I know did a "hey watch this" hard buzz of a friend's place a couple years ago, and ended up augering into his own hangar. Amazingly he survived, but it sure coulda gone the other way. You hear enough about when these stunts go wrong, and it (usually) makes you think twice when you're tempted to do something similar. (but not always :oops: )

Guess one guy's "Hey watch this!" is another guy's awesome YouTube video.

All depends on skill, experience and comfort level I suppose. What seems dangerous and foolhardy to a student pilot may be just a day's relaxation and fun to someone who's been at it for a while.
