Badlands South Dakota
Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.
I have flown over but never landed. Was wondering if anyone had any tips for doing a camping trip near the BL's? I realize you cannot land in the park, and most land is private, but has anyone got any tips for a camp-under-the wing dealio?
Looks like some awesome scenery out there.

Custer state park is a great stop. No services but there is a fire ring and nice grass to camp in. Check the fire condition before you build one. You can head over to the city of custer's airport and get gas and borrow the car to go to breakfast or what not. You can walk down the road from the state park airstrip and visit the presidential summer house and get a lemonade. Definitely a trip worth making.

Custer the city and Custer State Park are the only public strips IN the Black Hills. Close strips are Newcastle, Hot Springs, Spearfish, and Rapid City. Not much right at the Custer State Park Strip..except buffalo on occasion. Spearfish is the nearest to Deadwood where I like to go.Selfservice gas at the west end of the ramp at Rapid City. I've noticed several areas that might be landable on private and forest service land for the right plane but have not checked them out.

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.
If you want the full under wing experience with very few people and away from city conveniences then Custer State Park would be the place. But remember it has been really dry this summer with all the wild fires in the area and open campfires will still likely be banned. Otherwise I suggest staying at Custer County where you can camp under a wing on the airport or on grass by the FBO if you want. Showers available in a nice new building. Car available to get into town for supplies or see some great sights in the area. Fly out from there through the Badlands. The only strip I would use next to the Badlands would be at Wall SD but probably not a good choice for camping.

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.
