BASE Jump Gone Wrong

This is probably enough to keep me from ever trying BASE jumping.

I'm posting it in "Live to Tell" because the guy survived the jump, but it was a damn rough ride on the way down. He apparently ended up with "Compression Fracture of the T12 Vertebra, 5 stitches to the eye, 6 stitches to the chin, severely sprained Back, wrist and hand. multiple bruised areas."

Looks like just north of Moab along the Colorado. Possibly even the aptly named "natural selection viewpoint".

Holy shit ! That was hard to watch > He used toggles to try and turn around.Rear risers are the go for opening up facing the wall and wanting to turn around .Blow those toggles off and the canopy surges forward cause u have them stowed usually in deep brakes for a jump like that. Unbelievable that he lived . Hope they have a speedy recovery and all parts function in a good way !!

Re: BASE Jump Gone Wrong

You pay your money, you take your chances. At least he hit the one, single, sharp part on the whole wall, lol. Thinking next time he might just go for the rear risers and leave the toggles stowed. That liiiiitle teency extra mili-second that it took to grab and pull the toggles was the one he needed to not hit the wall, as hard at least. Luckily chicks dig scars!

Re: BASE Jump Gone Wrong

Not a beginner slope.

I'm not a jumper, but I heard from an experienced guy who was at Moab that week. He said this incident and several others that week were examples of newer guys getting in over their heads. He apparently had a similar bad opening on that same wall awhile back and he executed a 180 without the video even looking scary.

Glad this guy survived to post his video and achieve Internet immortality. #-o

Glad he lived, but it appears he will not be having offspring, which I'm also glad for.

Never jumped, only paraglided. In a turn into the wall, would you grab a handfull of rear riser only on one side? Brakes (as we call them in paragliding rather than toggles...same thing, correct?) are just extensions of the rear riser, meant to pull trailing edge down?

Re: BASE Jump Gone Wrong

Usually just grab rear riser on one side. If you grab both you may end up
Stalling your canopy and thats not good . After watching that video at normal speed not sure if a riser turn would have saved the day or not .Might of just kept them from hitting the wall so hard on the first strike. Low cliffs like that are not very forgiving . I think he got off easy .Seen many people get worked half as bad as this guy and not pull through .. The quality of the video is amazing ., Like a slow motion nightmare.

No shit... Makes me hurt just watching.

Not being one to jump out of airplanes or off high places, how'd he get aimed at the rocks like that in the first place?

Does it have a pic of the brown streak across the middle of the canopy and all over the harness?

Re: BASE Jump Gone Wrong

The "lightly used" part is my favorite. It is probably an accurate statement, however, as I think the rock wall and friction did most of the work in arresting his descent... 8)

Re: BASE Jump Gone Wrong

Looked like he had a twist in his risers. Not sure how that'd happen with a rig like that. I'm just a lowly paratrooper, and being such, in that situation, I probably would have panicked & pulled a left slip. Not sure what the outcome would have been for me.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: BASE Jump Gone Wrong

I hate it when that happens. This is why I'll never jump off of or out of anything.
