BCP call for content contributors!

Updated for 2019...

Well, 5+ years into the online-magazine form of the website (the only version many of you have known) and we have compiled a decent number of stories, guides, interviews, and trip reports. I appreciate greatly those who have stepped forward to pen their knowledge or adventures and contributed to the value of this site. Without you all, we'd simply have a few whiny stories about me going to Alaska and being enamored with everything.

I see a lot of you out doing some pretty cool stuff, sharing a single photo here and there, but definitely getting after it (and sometimes I reach out to you.) I would ask: Why not share that with a much larger audience? You'd be amazed the positive response to some of our content I share on social media. It's pretty cool. And I'd really like to see the variety of content we publish here grow.

Additionally, we have slowly but surely built the Knowledge Base. We've compiled an index of recommended STCs for backcountry birds, field approval copies for follow-ons, and some how-to's. See the list of latest articles here.

What are some content examples?

Let's continue! Here are some examples of the types of content you can contribute:

  • More trip reports. These are the easiest. Tell the story and share what a particular adventure meant to you.
  • Ever had a profound revelation about how things are done in aviation, particularly in this corner of GA?
  • Used your airplane to go on an epic hunt?
  • Have tales from the old days that would get you thrown in the slammer today? Statute of limitations!
  • Have a live-to-tell tale that you think would help other pilots? No one wants to expose themselves to ridicule or the FAA; we can protect your anonymity.
  • Have an aviation product or business related to backcountry flying with a history that would interest us? This is a very valuable way to promote, but the cost is writing a very content-rich article.
  • Working on or have completed a bush plane project that would inspire backcountry pilots?
  • Are you knowledgable in a technique, whether flying or mechanical, that would fit into our knowledge base? Rebuild a tailwheel or troubleshoot a problem in detail.
  • Have a modification you'd like to write a how-to article for?
  • Interested in testing some product or technology from this industry to write a review? I can use our name to try to secure some demo stuff.
  • Are you good at making videos? Propose a video idea to me that we could publish via the modestly-subscribed BCP Youtube channel.

What's qualifying content?

The writing and photography will have to meet a certain minimum standard, and the topic must be related to backcountry flying in some way. I have intentionally kept the content we publish very focused. Expertise or competence on the knowledge stuff must be clear.

Or, find an incomplete entry in the knowledge base and expand it out. There are several that need help...mountain flying, for example.

The more and better content we can publish, the more advertising accounts I can secure. A chunk of that money can pay contributors. How much is appropriate? I'm not sure just yet, but it would certainly pay for at least a tank of two of avgas. The standard has been steadily rising with quality content from the likes of Hammer, Bigrenna, MTV, etc. If I need to sweeten the pot a little to provide some gas money, I will.

PM me, or write to me at [email protected], and let me know if you'd like to put something together. We can work together to develop it, and no coding or any skills beyond taking photos and writing are required. In fact, I've just set up a system that will make it extremely easy for you to write, add photos, and organize.

Don't be intimated. If you have even an inkling of an idea, share it with me. Perhaps talking about it will help it materialize from the ether.

Thank you!

Zane

Re: BCP call for content contributors!

How finished of an article would you need to be considered?
Would you or others be willing to help edit copy?
What's the average word count you look for in an article?

The articles on BCP are very well organized and well polished. It can be intimidating to contribute.

I consider myself the creative director, so I'm here to help anyone from just a nucleus of an idea to a polished finished article. Every article undergoes editing and formatting by me.

Average word count? I dont know, honestly. Some of our pieces are WAY too long, but they have lots of info. "Welcome to the Ice World" is a nice length for a trip report/story.

Short answer: you don't have to bring much to the table; just a willingness to share your knowledge, some the time writing, and in some cases do your research.

BCP call for content contributors!

Someday I hope to contribute my gigantic library of Cessna literature to BCP. Scan them all and categorize them...we have a new baby due to arrive in 3 weeks so I have no way to commit at this time.

TGC170A could have benefitted from it but it wasn’t meant to be.

Re: BCP call for content contributors!

When I wrote the Ice world piece I just sat down on a Saturday morning with a cup of joe (which may or may not have had some bourbon in it) and started writing what I did and how the day unfolded. After that, I read through again and added and removed some details, and worked on word smithing for a half an hour, then I had a rough draft. Total time, maybe an hour and a half.

I emailed the draft to z-man and he liked it, so I read through one last time and produced a second draft. After that, Zane touched up a few things and sent me a link to the formatted article. I read through it, it sounded good, and now it's posted.

So... writing a trip report is pretty easy. I think the more difficult stuff is the knowledge base articles because of the research involved.

Anyway, it's a fun and rewarding experience. I hope to write again soon. I have been thinking about a photography piece. I have much to say on the topic, and have a bit of cool (and terrible) photography to contribute as examples.

Thank you for those who've emailed me. If I haven't responded to you, I will soon. Sometimes I have to digest and ponder...

Re: BCP call for content contributors!

Lets do the axes! I started brainstorming three months ago it will be a project but I'll get something maybe a like of smoking pile of shit, or maybe there will be some gems like this:

"That  may be one of the better phrases I’ve heard; "Yup you keep doing your crochety old retired clown pilot thing!""

Re: BCP call for content contributors!

Bumping this going into the holidays...

It's been a thin year for new articles and I'm offering $50-100 a pop for articles with photos.

If you have some downtime at the end of year and are inspired (see original post) reach out to me.

Thanks.

If you’re looking for some drama, I’d be happy to write up an article that details the steps and missteps that were taken while attempting to revive our 185. Maybe it’ll help someone from getting involved with shops that employ the shady practices that the people involved with my project used.

I’m not sure how to write it up without naming names, and I’m not certain if I’m ready to do that just yet as one of the shops that were involved has threatened one of the mechanics that were involved towards the end of the project with a defamation lawsuit for talking about him negatively online.

Re: BCP call for content contributors!

Zane,

The low altitude nature of my experiences in aviation make my stories and techniques somewhat controversial. I would be very pleased to work as second writer with anyone so that my contribution might be more appealing to the population you want to attract. I no longer have to fear my name coming up at GADO, but I am fine with it not coming up in any article we might cooperatively produce. I could work with MTV on different approaches to the mountains and different types of mountains.

Emailed you. Willing to write an article about why drinking coffee or beer inside a house is always better than flying these stupid airplanes.
