The above little snippet was part of an email I got today from a fellow BCP member here. It really gave me pause to think.

Sadly, not all of us are blessed to be living in Idaho, Alaska, Washington state, etc. and winging our Supercubs and Bearhawks along the Grand Tetons or Wrangell Mountains. Try beltways, freeways, and turnpikes. :-({|=

So for you readers out there, who like me, maybe fly an average of minus 25 hours per year, see only mountains of traffic congestion, and and are blessed with 50 % Ethanol gasoline,... that wonderful sentence gives us hope. =D>

Re: BCP is more of a state of mind than requirement to live

I would read BackCountryPilot.org, SuperCub.org while stationed during the "delete". I even called Jim at Cub Crafters on DSN while missiles were being shot at "delete". Really nice guy. I called Maule (Ray), ACA (Char and Jerry), even Jabiru (Rodney) in Australia.

Desperately wanted to fly where I did not need two 50 cal machine guns hanging off the aircraft. I got there eventually with the help of all of you. Thank you.

Keep dreaming it worked for me.

I am new here (long time Maule forum member) and I agree.

I like how both forums respect the individual and the flying and there is no hierarchy favoring those in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest etc.

Come to think about it, STOL skills and performance could come in handy flying over an urban area in an engine out situation. The best landing site may be a soccer field, parking lot, or Home Depot roof (I think I could do that one... :P )

If there is no river to land in, there is no repalcement for STOL skills. Just ask Sully! =D>

That's the idea behind the newest OAG Logo. Not quite a true Bushpilot, but one at heart, or a wannabe.

Kind of a fun spin on being a bushpilot. It's where you want to be ultimately, not where you are this moment.

Re: BCP is more of a state of mind than requirement to live

After I bought a damaged Avid Flyer, one day while sitting on a city commuter train into downtown LA, I came up with an idea that I just might be able to land that little Avid on a flat spot at the base of a radio tower that is just above the famous "Hollywood" sign. It would be pretty tricky, and it turned out to have a few obstacles that would make it even worse than it looks in the photos. You'd need a 15 knot headwind, even with an Avid.

But thinking about it in a silly daydream, I did manage to come up with the right caption, for the photo of this little airplane above the Hollywood sign, if I did manage to do the landing: "Back country is where you find it".

Along the lines of the original post, that concept might be a good thought for those of us who are indeed stuck in the city most of the time.

That's the point. We're dreamers, no matter where you are. Even if you're in the heart of Alaska or Canada way out in the middle of nowhere, it's all about the willingness to explore that gets you there. In the absence of being there, a Walter Mitty experience can do as well, or rub salt in the wound as is often the case. 8)

BigRenna sent me this photo as we both caught our commercial flights back home to the Lower 48, and I feel like it represents most of my daily desires for an alternate to this desk.

A good a place to post these pics as any: from a spur of the moment over nighter a while back.

It was early, and we both surprised each other, this was my single pass over him, I was really lucky to get the camera out, open the window, aim and shoot, all in about 5 seconds.

This thing works both ways, those of us lucky enough to be living in what amounts to a pilot's paradise, can get complacent and take it for granted, I have a renewed appreciation for the area I'm in, thanks to some others who are more city bound. Thanks I guess?!

Re: BCP is more of a state of mind than requirement to live

The March 2004 issue of Flying magazine had a piece written by Lane Wallace entitled "Urban Bush Flying- Adventure Close To Home". She came up from Calif (?) and did some off-airport flying with some guys I know in the south Puget Sound area. Good article & some great photos.

As for me, I like farm & backyard strips, which are quite often found in the lowlands instead of the mountains. Like the flying Lane Wallace did for her article, this flying is often close to home and can involve just an afternoon, instead of a whole weekend. I call this "back forty flying", as opposed to back country.
