Core or Rebuilt? How much?

We were going to just replace the studs with longer ones, but found that ours are seized in there pretty good and were going to require drilling. So exercised some flexibility and punted...

It's a low time core that I pulled from my 540, about 300 hrs. I plan to run a MT with a Jihostroj.

Re: Bearhawk 134RT Build

Cowling is lookin really good :D, we spent our time and measured twice cut once... good times - we are getting close.

Tunnel around airbox, we made ours removable for easier maintenance down the road.

Airflow augmenters in the lower cowling

We have to finish our rear augmenter and test fit our stainless exhaust system, and possibly fit the baffling rubber - then off to the paint booth for the base color.

Looks great. Just curious why you went with a small air filter? Why not the bigger one? Is it a drag issue?

Thanks!

No particular reason, we felt that this one was adequate for the application - and was what was called for in our documentation. The airbox we have is the larger of the two types at Aircraft Spruce, and the only one that fits our MA-5 carb.

Is there a larger Brackett filter available?

I think so. The ones on the 180/185 and most ACA products are bigger. This one looks more similar to a 172 filter to me. Maybe I'm seeing it wrong.

I have to spec an air box and filter too. Did you use the formula in this doc? http://www.brackettaerofilters.com/docu ... OMEBLD.pdf

How to find the specification for mass airflow for a given model Lycoming?

Re: Bearhawk 134RT Build

The airbox we used is specified in the kit, and the airfilter matches the airbox. We have had the parts for quite a while now (years), so we had to remember. But in any case, didn't do any calculations. :D

How to find the specification for mass airflow for a given model Lycoming?

You can calculate it quite easily

It's an 8.8L engine displacement, assume it's a Carnot engine i.e. is perfectly efficient at drawing in air.

Engine turns at 2750 RPM which is 46 Revs/s, and one in every fourth strokes is an intake stroke, run the numbers and that is about 100 L/s of airflow.

I worked off about 90 L/s I think, to account for the real-world inefficiency.

Exhaust System / Augmenter

Tried mocking up the exhaust system for fitment and hanger mounting/adjustment. Looks good to see the stainless dual exhaust installed! If that doesn't make a motorhead smile nothing will!

Image

Here is how the tunnel cooling augmenter turned out on the bottom of the cowling: (My father is a real sheetmetal magician! He continues to amaze me with his skill!) :D

Image

Another pic of the cowling doors with a little curve in them now, much better than without:

Baffling and LED Landing light

We finished installing an LED landing light in the nose bowl, not a lot of room to work with up there - even with the smaller lightweight starter that we have. Crazy that this Whelen only indicated a draw of 1.5 amps at 14v, that's so awesome compared to the halogen... I don't have a pic of the nosebowl with it installed unfortunately - we went with a round hole with a lexan lens which looked the best I thought.

Image

Made some "cups" to cover the motor mount holes up and seal the baffling up tight, I RTV'd the inside of the cups prior to install.

Image

With the newer style governor installed, prior to my putting the sealing rubber on the baffling:

Image

Nosebowl is a much tighter fit now that the rubber is installed on the baffling... hope that we have the engine bay sealed enough for adequate cooling, I feel pretty good about how it turned out.

Re: Bearhawk 134RT Build

Well, here is where we are now! Prepping for painting the stripes down the fuselage.

Here is our paint scheme, Trainer Blue and Nevada Silver both metallic paints.
Image

Starting to mask off the stripes, first time doing such a thing - was a bit tedious.
Image

Image

Image

Here is where it ended up - back in the paint booth ready to go!
Blue stripe first - then mask for the silver stripe.
Image

Image

Also ordered our Prop, Throttle, and Mixture control cables - wheew boy they don't give those away cheap!

Re: Bearhawk 134RT Build

The stripe is done!

I'm really happy with the way it turned out, I think the color on the control surfaces is going to look great with the stripes.

Re: Bearhawk 134RT Build

We got the 3" numbers put on the rudder and for a quick look set it up on the vertical stab.

Image

I like how the solid control surface color contrasts with the fuselage, as I had hoped. :D

Image

Spent a while getting the control cables for prop, throttle, and mixture run through the firewall. A little work here building a custom attach bracket for the cables on the engine oil sump, and getting them adjusted for play.

Looks like we are getting closer to flying this thing!
