Been to FL500 lately?

Back in the 1980's the the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards attempted to break the record in a similar fashion flying from the glider port I was working at at the time using the Mojave wave. They used one of our Grob G103 two place ships with a portable LOX system mounted in the front seat. The pilot wore a U-2/SR-71 pressure suit and flew from the back seat. They never did get the weather they needed to break the record and abandoned the effort after a few months.
Congratulations, Steve and Einar, however this could have been accomplished here in the states in the Sierra wave and personally I would have prefered that they had done it that way.

They have been persistant. That team have spent a few seasons based in Omarama, in the South Island of NZ, testing and attempting to achieve the same result. Phase 2 looks like another interesting challenge, 100,000ft! Maybe this can be achieved in Omarama...
