Bench With A View

After a less than perfect first ever landing on this bench last week I was able to return yesterday for redemption. It's quite gnarly IMHO. It's long enough but has rocks and brush to dodge along with a cliff to fall off. I don't have a ranking system for strips, but if I did this one is right up there in difficulty for me. Video makes it look easy though, mountain seems steeper in person. Killer views and solitude.

Enjoy :D https://vimeo.com/50450330

Great spot and video, Rob! 8)

I believe there's still one spot out in the Owyhees you can still land on a bench and have a spectacular view of the Owyhee River and canyon. Last I looked on the BLM map, this spot is still private land and some might know where I'm talking about.

PM me if you want to know.

You bet! I'm about 80 miles north of SLC. You're welcome to stay here (how wide are those new wings? 40' door.) there's plenty of room in the hangar. We have an extra room, car, or whatever you might need. Takes about an hour to drive to SLC from here, everyone drives real fast around here. If you want to spend some time flying that would be awesome.

I'm wondering what your buddy was thinking that second when he saw your big prop heading right for him. [-o<
Good save!!! Seriously, nice flying Rob. Really enjoy your video. Looks like you have the bench mastered now :D
Our son lives just south of SLC. I know what you mean by how fast everyone drives down there. If you don't drive 10 mph over the speed limit then your are just a menace.

Re: Bench With A View

Well, since there's a little thread drift going on and you all know food is kind of important to me. Here's a great place for pizza that is close to the real Italian thing (at least that's what one of our Italian co-worker has said). It really is awesome.

http://www.settebello.net/

And for a complete 180........ Sages Cafe Vegan restaurant is pretty awesome. Probably one of the best dinner salads I've ever had. (two of my co-workers are Vegans for health reasons) http://sagescafe.com/ Side note about Sages. You might get interesting looks going into this place wearing a Cabella's tee shirt with an Elk on the back  #-o . But whatever. The food is awesome. :D

Maaate that was pretty edgey in more ways than one. =D> This is what I love about you guys, you push that edge with a calculated approach, always challenging yourselves and providing me with inspiration to have ago myself, one day although not in the near future but one day. I liked seeing the missed attempts, made it more real and showed how challenging it really was.

Edgy is a good way to describe it. Easy if you do it juuust right, but really sucks if you're off a bit. :D

Bench With A View

Rob, it was hard to tell from the video, but what was the slope/camber to that bench? It seemed like you were landing downhill, but video can make stuff look weird and betray the actual slope. Does it also curve to your left? Would be cool to see a screenshot of the satellite photo.

Re: Bench With A View

It's off camber to the direction of the cliff. With dog legs. The video does't do it justice. From a distance it looks real easy, but there are bumps and little rock outcroppings on the bench. Overall the bench is perfectly flat, it was created by the ancient Lake Bonneville http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Bonneville so it's really flat.

Google Earth must not think this a high priority area. Pretty low res.
