Bendix/King KA134 Audio Panel

Can anyone tell me how to get a Bendix/King KA134 audio panel out? I need to send it out for service and cannot get it out of the panel.

most of them take a loonng skeeney screwdriver.

bout 12" - 14" long and a bit less than 1/8" dia.

usually goes in a hard to find hole in the middle bout the bottom.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.

some of them

Mauleace:

Some of them take an allen wrench, about 1/8 inch size. On some units you may have to remove the nobs in the middle to access the hole. If I recall correctly, these audio panels may be made by PS engineering for King.

Hmm. I know my KY97 and KT76A both come out with a very small socket head (allen/hex/whatever) located in the middle of the faceplate. You back it out until it separates from the tray, then pull.

Hole

There is a tiny hole in the middle, but it is not an allen or srew head. There are no knobs, only buttons.

in the hole

Mauleace:

The screw head is inside the hole, perhaps an inch or so. Take an allen hex head set and try the small one til one grabs and turns. Turn counter clock wise till the unit slips loose, then it pulls out from the tray. Hopefully the problem is not in the tray connectors or the wires going to the radios.

Engine Monitor

I know there is only a small chance this has anything to do with the problem, but I recently had an EI engine monitor installed. Shortly after that, I started having trouble hearing myself when I would transmit and hearing others. The strange part is that it does start right away. From a cold start it takes 15 to 30 minutes for the problem to begin. I have two radios and the problem is the same on both, I also know that I am transmitting because I have done radio checks and can hear that it is loud and clear.

Can the engine monitor affect the com radios? Routing of sensor cables too close to the antenna coax?

What your loosing is your talk back circuit in the 134 part of that is a ground. Before you send it off check and make sure the folks that installed your monitor didn't loosen up a ground point and forget to tighten it back up

Ground

Mr Scout...

Thanks for the suggestion, I think you are on to something. I checked the ground, was able to tighten the screw a little, I also cleaned the plugs on the headsets, it is a lot better. There are a lot of eyelets on the same screw at the bottom of the dash, I might relocate some to spread the load.

It is still a little scratchy, but everyone hears me just fine. Spent some time with center, approach and a tower today, no complaints from them.

I did not have time to try to remove the unit, but may not need to now.
