Fellow Backcountry Pilots-
The USFS is planning significant and desperately needed maintenance activities at Bernard Airstrip (U54) located in the Frank Church Wilderness Area on May 15th, 16th and 17th.
We are seeking volunteer support for May 15th, if you are willing and able your efforts would be greatly appreciated. The scheduled work for May 15th includes the following;
1.) Brush removal from the edges of the airstrip.
2.) Removal of grass that is growing up between the painted rocks
3.) Fire ring rebuilding
4.) Possibly relocating the pit toilet.
Additional, more significant grading of the runway will be performed on the 16th and 17th and a Notam will be issued to close the airstrip on those two days.
Volunteers are really only needed on the 15th, arrival should be before 9:00 AM and departure could be planned either late that morning or very early in the afternoon. It is also acceptable to camp that night and take off early the morning of the 16th.
Bernard airstrip presents its own set of challenges and it is understood that it may beyond the skill set of some backcountry pilots. If you have the right aircraft and you are up to the challenge your help is desperately appreciated and needed. Like every airstrip, especially in the backcountry make certain before you fly.
Please PM me for contact and additional information - your help is appreciated!
Best Regards-
