I personally have never owned one but I have 2 rather good friends who tried them. But were long time 2 stroke users and both did meticulous maintenance. Both had catastrophic engine failures. Both were lucky to walk away.
There is a reason that Rotax 2 strokes are so popular on ultralights and experimentals. They work, you can find parts, and they hold their value. I'm sure you can find people out there who have had good luck with Hirths but the incidents of failures reported on the forums and blogs seem to be higher for them.
They do look good on paper though.
