So I have searched the threads related to camp/fly camp gear, and didn't see any specific recomendations.

I need a new camp chair - one with arm rests, but light and in a bag. Most seem to run 8-9 lbs, but was hoping for something 5 or less.

Any specific recommendations??

Our favorite camping chairs are the old folding aluminum ones. They are not in a bag and don't compact as well but are around 5lbs. I lay them flat on the floor of the airplane and then stack the rest of the gear on top of them. The new folding lounge's are pretty nice and even have foot rests but are heavy.

I agree. If you want real light go with the beach style where your butt is 4" off the ground. They are like 2 pounds.

Definitely don't want the beach style. Something like this, but just wondering if anyone had recommendations on a specific chair that they know the weight of.

They usually only provide shipping weight (8.5lbs).

This could be your chair Emmet, it looks pretty good....I'd like to see that test to 750 lbs! The kind you linked to are heavy and I feel not that comfortable, and just a bit too gimmicky.

I'll stick with my Crazy Creek camp chair, with your legs so near the ground it's like a recliner, and being near the ground you don't need a beer can holder on the armrest, you just put the can on the ground. Same deal with cooking, you don't need a table. I've researched this extensively 1.5 lbs ain't bad either.

One disadvantage of the design: if you are at a gathering with everyone else sitting in normal height lawn chairs, you'll feel like a major geek! So, I have backup conventional sitware for times like that, solo I take the Crazy Creek.

They're everyting I like in airplane camping gear-- light, cheap, & reasonably compact.

I needed a regular sized folding aluminum chair with reasonably good back support. It also had to fold small and be light weight. This one is it!!

At less than 4 lbs it's light enough. What's really amazing is how quickly it deploys and how small and compact it is when it's stowed. Engineering and quality are excellent user reviews on Amazon are good too. One person on another list found it for a bit less $ than Amazon had it for, so check around.

I,ve also been looking for the old style aluminum folding chairs and they are difficult to find anymore, every store has the steel frame folders with fabric in a bag. I just purchased two mostly aluminum folding chairs with a pocket satchel on one side and a built in folding table on the other side from Harbor Freight for around $35 each. They weigh less than 5 lbs. They are simple and appear to be reasonably sturdy but they don't fold up all high tech like the heavier steel ones.

The straight back mesh chair is pretty comfy.

I am not fond of the low beach chairs. I look like a beached walrus trying to get out of those things.

Pretty laid back, but VERY comfortable. I looked all over trying to find the lighter aluminum ones, but I just couldn't find them.

I have two of these. I use them for motorcycle trips and motor home trips. 5.3 lbs and they pack small. I tip the scales at 275 and they hold up for me.

Oh, a bit pricey, but excellent quality.

These chairs are very comfortable, strong and weigh about a pound. Great to backpack with also. Only negative is that they are low to the ground and for some may be hard to get out of, but if you fall out it's not a long way down,

Well, I didn't really achieve my goal of a sub-5lb chair. Appreciate all the suggestions. I just couldn't go with the "low to the ground" ones - I have a limp on my right leg (spinal injury when 18), and getting out of them is just a pain in the ass for me. And, I have to admit, I didn't want to spend more than 50 bucks.

Ordered this one, which is a svelte 7lbs. Alluminum frame. What sold me was that it came with a bottle opener . And it was only $29 here - and I did check other places where it was usually close to $60.

Never thought about a chair for the plane. I have a bunch of the fold up ones like from Walmart. This light packing thing is a pain. I usually fill the whole back of my Toyota 4-Runner when I go camping for a week. I do my have tent, pad, and pack ready for JC just need to work on the rest of the details.

Just had a thought, which is always a danger for me. Why not take the seat out of the plane and use it? Get a couple of used seat rails from your local mechanic (they are always replacing them) and slide the seat on them so it isn't grinding into the ground on the attachment points. Probably not a great idea, but it would save on weight and space!

Actually Allen, you hit the nail on the head. Seats in my plane are very easily removable (just pull to pip pins). I was thinking that all i need is a little folding base that has the same footprint as the seat base. That would be cool and light!!


Might have to work on that for the Rans guys...
