To close out this month’s article, I want to touch on an important piece of ongoing business. We remain fully engaged with
the USFS as we work to clarify communication surrounding the Big Creek Four. The State of Idaho’s position is
straightforward: these airstrips are open for use, period. Yes, the USFS has cameras in place to monitor activity.
Yes, they are required to maintain the strips to the standards in place when the Central Idaho Wilderness Act (CIWA) was
enacted in 1980. Yes, they must notify the public of any concerns or maintenance actions. And yes, these locations must be
respected as wilderness trailheads — not used as routine training grounds.
