Black Hills, South Dakota / Hill City Area

Howdy-

Just landed a job teaching a class in Hill City, SD and I figure its a good area to fly around in. It also will play into a cross country trip. Anyone know any strips around Hill City to tie the Skywagon down for a week. Any place I should plan on going around there?

Thanks!

Custer airport..closest airport to Hill City. Others are Hot Springs (south), Rapid City(northeast), Sturgis (north), Newcastle WY(west), and Spearfish(northwest).
Hope this helps.
If you would like to do some flying I make it up to the Black Hills several times a year and I also motorcycle and drive the Black Hills several times a year. (Deadwood etc.)
If you need an A&P or IA services let me know. I know of two providers up in that area. Custer State Park also has a paved strip but there are no services there.
I love the Black Hills and may retire up there.

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

See the Little Big Horn battle field if the story tellers are working. Custer State Park with the tunnels. Sturgis, Lead, Deadwood. Spearfish Canyon. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.

I can't say enough about the service we got from Ben and Lori at Sierra Delta Aviation at Custer County airport. Just read the comments below posted on Air Nav. The last one is my own. Ben and Lori are a young couple starting out and are doing a great job. This is a mountain airport and gets you close to all the sights of the Black Hills. You will love the Hills.

I've been flying into Custer for years, but last week I was pleasantly surprised to actually be greeted on the ramp, assisted with tie-downs, handed a note that was left by my mom about where her car was and more importantly, where to meet her for lunch. :) New management at the FBO is off to a good start, in my experience.

Arrived on 8/06/10 for a long weekend visit to Mt. Rushmore. Ben had ample hangar space for us to put the Six in. A friend at my home airport highly recommended to me to hangar the bird because they get a lot of storms with hail. $30 a night for a hangar. Ben also had a rental car for us at $30 a day. Although the car has seen better days, it did run great and had the stickers for parking at Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park so that offset the cost a little bit. We were very pleased with the hospitality of Sierra Delta and Ben and look forward to a return trip.

Beautiful airport and great FBO. We enjoyed camping with our plane. Nice showers and Internet access in the office, and a complimentary breakfast at Sierra Delta in the morning (only during the Oshkosh week). I tried to leave some $$$ for the breakfast, but was told that it's part of the airport budget. Thanks for the wonderful facilities!

Got to Custer on a Sunday afternoon. Had prearranged for a courtesy car because the car rental company was sold out. Ben had a customer stay an extra day, so the Airport Manager (Brian) came out to loan us his personal car. While out to dinner, Ben saw a storm coming and tried to call us about getting the plane into a hangar. Our cell coverage caused us to miss the call, but he was out there at the airport to make sure the planes were okay. Super friendly people all around, and the area is unbelievably beautiful. We will be back! Please give these great people your business.

The local rental cars were all taken so Ben reserved his courtesy car for us for the whole weekend. While at the Rafter J Bar Ranch for a family reunion, a sudden and unexpected hailstorm struck and was heading toward the airport where our plane was tied down. Knowing we could not get back to Custer in time, a call to Ben on his cell number Saturday interrupted a planned fishing trip with his family but even so Ben made it to the airport ahead of the storm and got our plane inside before it hit. Thanks again for going above and beyond. The best to you Ben and Lori.
