Boise, ID to Cody, WY.

Just curious. Does anyone know of a route to take from Boise, ID to Cody, WY. I hope to make one of my first cross country flights by myself to Cody this fall. I'm thinking about flying directly there over Yellowstone Park and through the mountians into Cody. Any suggestions? Any better safer routes for a new pilot?

Pretty much just over Yellowstone Lake and then there is the (high, steep) canyon going down to Cody that you can spot by the road headed east over the pass away from the lake. I've been through at bad times of the day and it can get pretty rough. Went through a week ago at 7AM and it was nice and smooth. Not what I would recommend for a student cross-country flight, but if you're flying into Slate Creek and such, probably nothing new. How far away from the cert, Mack?

Hey Matt, just replied to your PM. But yeah, as long as the route is good and the air is some what smooth, I feel comfortable flying through the canyons. I've been flying with JoeCub and the other guys through the Owyhee canyons and learning alot from them. But, it's always a little (ok, maybe alot  ) more nerve racking when you go at it alone. If you or someone else in the Boise area would be going that way sometime in Oct. and would like to be my safety pilot, that would be great. I don't have any specific plans right now, but I can be flexible.

When in Oct are you going and for how long? I almost wouldn't mind going, only problem is that is huntin season for me and I can't miss that.

How far from the big 'ride are you? Good luck on it.

For a first time I would go the following:

BOI - IDA - up over Ennis then Bozeman, Livingtson around the corner at Red Lodge and then south to Cody.

The terrain West of Cody is NOT friendly. There are routes to take that can get you there, but not for a first time trip in my opinion.

Anytime in October would be good. I'm sure I'll be flexible enough to what for a nice forcasted day and go for it! My buddy over in Cody is a big game hunter, so he won't miss any hunting days niether. I'm sure you guys would get along. I'll hang out at the house with his wife  while you guys are out hunting!!

I'm hoping to get my check ride done by Oct. Just need to do the solo cross country and some more night flying.

I'll keep this route in mind for sure! But, as long as the weather is good and not too bumpy, I like Matt's route alot better. I'm not near as experianced as most of the other BCP and BCAHer's  on this forum, but I've been doing alot of flying with my friends through the mountians and canyons in southern Idaho and eastern Oregon (Owyhee's \:D/ ), but I totally understand the risk's of flying in the much bigger mountians and canyons in WY, and CO.
