Bonneville speed week

Has anybody flown in there and camped. I heard that you can land on the salt but have to be off in evening

Re: Bonneville speed week

I wouldn't want to camp on the salt. but I suppose you could just fly off a bit and find a suitable spot.

Personally I would head back to "Bendover" get a room and donate to the casino.
They need help keeping all of those lights turned on. :D

Re: Bonneville speed week

Did a google and found two threads on BCP. I have not found anybody that has plane camped there. Maybe for good reason

Re: Bonneville speed week

I wanted to fly out last year, but the event flyer said absolutely no aircraft on the salt.

So, do you really want to land your airplane on a salt flat? If so, I'd GUESS that it'd be pretty easy to land outside the area covered by their special use permit and ride a bike to the races. Maybe not...never looked into it as the event doesn't interest me. But it's rather hard to believe that the event has jurisdiction over the entire 25,600 acres of the Bonneville Salt Flat.

Re: Bonneville speed week

I’ve never flown in during speed week but have been to the event several times. If you’ve never been, it is a great grassroots scene with something for every gearhead. I don’t believe aircraft are permitted anymore. Frankly in the years I’ve been for the event, the salt was slightly moist and has a stickiness similar to mud or snow that sticks to everything and tracks everywhere. With the wendover airport so close by, I think I’d save my airplane the salt bath and bring a bike or bum a ride in town. As far as camping at the wendover airport, you’ll have to check on that with the airport manager.

Flew out with my Dad about fifty years ago to watch a days worth of racing. That was back in the Craig Breedlove and Don Vesco era. Salt ridges were so rough it set off the ELT in the 182. The only way to camp is with an RV. I'm not sure they would let the common folk stay the night now days.
