Bonneville Speed Week Fly In?

I was thinking we should get a fly in going during Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats this year. I have lived in Utah all my life but had never been the couple miles off I-80 to see where they do the record runs. My brother and I went over after the Wendover Airshow last year and we were lucky enough to see a guy set a new Motorcycle record, 473 Mph?. It was great!

Any way, Speed Week is August 13 - 19th and hundreds of people attend. I have sent a email to SCTA to ask if that would be OK with them if we flew in. On the SCTA website it said everything has to be off the salt at night so we might need to taxi or land up a dirt road or something. Wendover is only a few miles too so you could stay in town and fly out each day. I could probably get a water and a car out there if we need to shuttle from the dirt out to the spectator area.

I was thinking this would be an informal fly in or just some guys going camping. What do you guys think? I'll let you know when I hear something from SCTA.

Here"s a site with photos from previous years:

I have flown to Speedweek a couple times and it is a ton of fun. Just landed and parked near the rope like the rest of the spectators.
Speedweek is very laid back and the people are cool gearheads so an airplane causes no panic. You will need some ground transportation as it is huge, the pits are four rows deep and a couple miles long, the starting line is a couple miles from the pits. A bike is good enough but something with a motor would be better. Stayed in Ely NV on one trip, walked to a hotel from the airport. Everybody must be off the salt at sunset but finding a nice dirt road to camp on would not be hard. Evening car show in Wendover at the casino are a good time also. Been kicking around the idea of going again this year with my buddy.
Glad to help if you have any more questions.

That's great Dale, I guess we got 2 so far! My brother isn't a flyer so I can have him bring out a truck or suburban we can use. I can haul in food, BBQ's or whatever. Whatever you do, DON"T FORGET SUNBLOCK!!!!!

Thought about it for years. Just flew over it on Saturday enroute to U77. Maybe this is the year. Think that there is a dry lake just a bit to the west that we could camp at.
